Aside from RPS' article on the matter, check out page 22 of the Valve employee handbook - the guy in the top-right of that image is wearing a HL3 t-shirt.

 

That's confirmation that HL3 is going to be announced soon if ever you needed it - they like to hide things like that.

Is now the time to say that I've not played Half Life 1 or 2 even halfway through?

 

I watched my brother play the original years ago (not the whole playthrough as that could be dull, but the beginning and the ending at least) and had some fun with parts of Half Life 2 but never quite found the time to run through them both despite owning them.

 

I suspect I was playing too much X-COM at the time, if there can actually be too much of that.

Well, go play them. HL isn't as amazing as it once was, but it's still good, and HL2 holds up well.

How dare you! I still see the original Half Life as one of the best shooters out there, certainly has a much more appealing storyline than shitty COD/Medal of Honor (make no mistake, I had fun playing them, but the story is always a mess when it's not WWII related, and a repeating one usually when it is).

All it needs is sprinting and autoregenerating health, and it's up to date with current FPS standards, that is how little the genre has progressed.

 

Still one of my favs, high up there with Deus Ex (which is arguably not an FPS, but still).
