This log will be split in parts, first part is some general information about the squad, skills armour and weapons in the game. This part is not tied to this specific playthrough and parts of it are loaned from other guides I found on the net (and I thank their authors for the time they spend on them). The next part will be a list of the research and development trees I followed, depicting the timeline . draken35 Posted March 3, 2012 Author Share Posted March 3, 2012 [Weapon] This is an incomplete list of weapons that you will encounter during the game. Some of these weapons are really important early on but your research and development will make them obsolete during the mid and late game. But if they are all you have you better know to make the best out of them! I generally have a configuration with a hard hitting DPS (damage per second) weapon and one long range weapon in the backpack for each agent. Early game that could be a shotgun and an SMG or good ranged pistol. As soon as rifles start becoming available I try to switch to them (AGILITY skill improves rifles) since they typically combine range with good damage, especially the Hard and Universal types (depending on enemy type). Mid game almost all of my agents sport an assault and a sniper rifle, and have received skills to accommodate that. A good tip to remember is that if you don't use a full clip but you reload before you run the gun dry, you can pick up the half empty clip and this will be filled as soon as your squad returns to base. This is an invaluable tactic early on in the game where you find really powerful weapons but only have sparse ammo for them. You have to pay attention to your squad while they are in combat though, because they will happily empty their guns on wounded enemies if you miss-click on them. Late game is really the Enh. Plasma Gun that makes the difference. Don't bother with the first generation of the weapon, only produce one to be able to research the Enhanced version. This is a truly devastating one-shot weaponthat will kill most enemies before they retaliate (save for Reticulans with Bio armor and some high HP transgenants) You still need to carry some sniper rifles for long range combat, have a heavy gunner with a collapsible weapon and special type weapons like rocket launchers that can destroy walls and vehicles. So don't you go in a mission carrying only Plasma guns! I find the Collapsible Plasma Gun a must for every Base or Alien Base Mission (including the Moon) I almost exclusively use Aimed mode, other than face-to-face encounters, so I only consider the effective rangeof the Aimed mode here. DPS is what the game calls "Rate of fire" which is basically Damage per bullet * bullets per second. There are few tactical situations where you would care more about the Damage per bullet alone than the DPS, but in general DPS is the metric to use when you choose weapons. If your favorite weapon (typically heavy) is not on the list don't fret! We probably just have different play styles. Another piece of equipment (although not strictly a weapon) is the Psi Projector. By the end of the game all of my agents carry one in their betls, and I have my Reticulan agent holding his at all times. You can use it both offensively on the enemy of defensively on your mind control agents. You never knew you hated the Enh. draken35 Posted March 3, 2012 Author Share Posted March 3, 2012 [Armour & Skills] The overall strategy for your skills is to achieve th minimum requirements for all the training modules. You won't be able to achieve this early on so you need to chose what you should Level up. Early game you need to be able to shoot at your targets and move on your feet. So Skills like strength and agilityshould be raises up to Good and Very Good. During the mid game you should try to look at your primary weaponand the corresponding skill (aim for very good and excellent on your rifles for example) and round up your skills to receive the remaining training. Late game, the biggest threats are AOE weapons (Plasma weapons and Missile launchers) and the biggest enemy of all: Mind control. Levels 10-14 are probably where you want to invest in Will and Intelligence so the effects of mind control are lessened on your squad. You will be freed faster, perhaps within the duration of a smoke grenade, giving you the time to regroup, heal, throw grenades against the mind control reticulan or hidefrom all enemies' view. Also using PSI abilities offensively is devastating for the enemy force. Late in the game once your PSI abilities are where you want them, you want to raise as much as possible your health, by investing in Strength. This is the only real way to survive some of the tough battles in the Alien ships. once you have reached Excellent or Heroic skills in your primary weapon you also want to consider raising your Alien skill, so each shot you land on them can have a greater potential for damage. This is particularly true for your sniperswho can cripple enemies with just 2-3 shots. here is some advice I found on the net and is extremely useful: * Losing a soldier can be more of a problem than losing a mission.* takes longer to equip from the backpack than the belt* A carry load less than 100% gives no speed bonus, 200% is maxed (and to be avoided) SKILLS & Training Attribute Requirements for training professions(remember an ability can only be raised once by any profession/training.
