And to think we are able to completely disregard it all, pretty much every day our entire lives...

I suppose, given our own evident insignificance and that of our lifespan in relation to this, it makes sense that ultimately it matters not. We can barely grasp the very scale, but its rather amazing to see we do dare try.

We fly regardless, somewhere in space, in the generational ship we've called Earth.

p.s.: how fast are we moving and where to? The latter question does seem to be rather more complex to answer, so I guess we shall happily travel on blind.

p.p.s.: and people worry about driverless cars... ;)

Not only driverless, but we worry who's car is faster. At the general Earth's speed in the system at 30 kilometres per second, who cares?! :D

Anyway, the scope of the universe does not affect people at all. Us being insignificant in the whole picture does not help with each of us seeing ourselves as centres of the world. IMO, such is the nature of life. Though you know, ants and bees may have a better understanding of what it means to be a part of something bigger than we will ever be able to.

@Silencer: a fine godly conversation. ;)

So, the Earth travels around with the combusting ball of fire we call Sun, making, just relative to it, orbits of 942 million Kilometers in a year. Yet most of us will insist, complaining, we don't get to travel much at all. wink.png Even when our travelling is marked by distinct seasons, no less.

The Sun itself travels some 792.000 Kilometers per hour, which should give something like 6.937.920.000 Km in a single one of our years. Multiply this last figure by your age and you should have a notion of how much you've actually moved around just by this referential!

I know what you think of the sentence, but, evidently, for most of Earth's inhabitants 'ignorance is bliss'... tongue.png

Phenomenal vids, Thor... Suddenly I really do feel like... a voyager... through space... a space voyager. Funny though, with all the travelling done already, I'd still like to go and see other stars from close by.

Love the vids, must show these to the kids.

Just realized that from the onset of the dinosaurs, Sun actually made a single circle around the centre of the galaxy! Damn, are we small...

What location/position we might currently be in is apparently somewhat iffy too:

From the vid's description:

The Sun is near the inner rim of the Galaxy's Orion Arm, within the Local Fluff of the Local Bubble, and in the Gould Belt, at a distance of 8.33 (27168.8 light years) ± 0.35 kiloparsecs (1141 light years) from the Galactic Center.

The Sun is currently 5--30 parsecs (16--98 ly) from the central plane of the Galactic disk. The distance between the local arm and the next arm out, the Perseus Arm, is about 2,000 parsecs (6,500 ly). The Sun, and thus the Solar System, is found in the Galactic habitable zone.

Useful to keep in mind when you think about going for a stroll and visit the neighbours. wink.png

Some people are too stupid to live on this planet.

A popular YouTube series comes to mind: Is it a good idea to microwave this? Um, no. wink.png
