DaviBones
The crave for strategy, that is. I'm looking for a new strategy/tactics game I haven't played. I'm waiting for SotS 2 and Skyrim to come out and it'd be nice to have a good thinker's game to while away my time in between school. My favorites have been SotS (for the strategy), Jagged Alliance 1 and 2 (for the tactics) and UFO: Aftermath and Afterlight (for the story and excellent mix of tactics and strategy, especially in Aftermath). I tried Aftershock, it was pretty... erm.. shocking. as in shockingly bad. Again, strategy + tactics would be ideal... I tried browsing the forums, but there weren't a lot of gameplay descriptions. My priorities are first and foremost, good gameplay, followed by good immersion, preferably in a fictional setting, but historical works too if it's both fun and informative. My third priority is the age of the game (anything before about 2000, like most of X-COM, is awkward for me to play, I can't describe it). Feel free to offer anything that doesn't quite fit into those priorities, I realize this life on planet earth isn't always going to be perfect. FullAuto
Panzer Corps is good if you fancy some WWII tactics, turn-based hex map job. Solium Infernum is probably the best strategy game of the last few years, but you need other humans, the AI is good but not that good. Combat Mission is a superb tactical WWII game, great simultaneous turn execution system. Games combining tactics and strategy are exceedingly rare and precious. I can't think of any aside from X-Com and JA2 right now. Welcome to the forum, BTW. Also feel free to flame me for my decidedly selfish first post Pfft. Long way to go to beat some regulars (me). DaviBones
I'll try em out. Thanks for the suggestions, and hey, thanks for those reviews you've written! That's what got me into SotS, and that's one of my favorite games I've ever played. Combat Mission looks a bit complicated, hows the learning curve? silencer_pl
All of the Total War series are fun. Take your pick - there is Medieval 1 & 2, Rome, Shogun, Empire and Napoleon + all addons to each part.
Sunflash
I'd say Civ V, but that might remind FA of something I've managed to forget to do several times... >.>

Combat Mission looks a bit complicated, hows the learning curve? It's not that bad, but yes, it is complex. Very much a tactical simulation. Plenty of gentle scenarios/training missions available though, plus a quick battle option as you're easing into it. I'd say Civ V, but that might remind FA of something I've managed to forget to do several times... /points and screams, the horde gathers

FullAuto
It's politer? There's also Soldiers: Heroes of WWII. I'm not a fan of real-time strategy/tactics games usually, but this includes a very cool time manipulation option so you can slow things down or speed them up, it's fantastic. silencer_pl
If we are in WW2 theater then Desert Rats vs Africa Korps.
DaviBones
Hmm, the Soldiers game sounds pretty good, I'll check it out.. As it is, I got sucked into Star Ruler and Age of Wonders... Played the entire AoW campaign through, which I've never had the patience to do. It's a really well done (fantasy) strategy and tactical system, although my only two complaints are that you run out of things to research really fast and the AI is horrible tactically, but strategically... well, I struggled. (on medium ) Of course they fixed both of those in AoW 2... which I'm about to go play. Woohoo! Also, sorry for the mix up FullAuto. I do really like both of your reviews though, so thanks. Aren't we all a little bit obsessive expert?
