Hi Chilko,

Those four buttons are used for specifying if and how Time Units are reserved for your soldiers' later usage:

- the green arrow is the default, and it means no restriction will be placed on Time Unit usage

- the remaining buttons ensure enough time units are respectively reserved for: a Snap Shot, an Aimed Shot, and, lastly, an Auto Shot.

This is a pretty important setting as it will impact your chances of "reacting" during the aliens' turn.

If you finish your turn and leave your soldiers with enough Time Units to fire, they will automatically do so during the aliens' turn as an alien comes into their line of sight (which is designated Opportunity Fire).

Hope that helps...

The reserve TU buttons actually have no influence over reaction shot chances at all, they only reserve TUs for those actions during for the current turn. More as a precautionary measure if you aren't sure how many TUs you're going to use if you walk across a certain length or difficult looking terrain like slopes.

Reactions are always snapshots for X-Com, snap or auto for the aliens, and your remaining TUs and reaction level are what determine the chance of taking a reaction shot. Initiative, as it's called in Rebelstar, is Current TUs / max TUs * Reactions. Basically to get the best chance of getting off a reaction shot, you want to end the turn with as much of your TUs as you can - 100% if possible.

"The reserve TU buttons actually have no influence over reaction shot chances at all (...)"

Right you are, NKF. I did use quotation marks for "reacting", but I now realise the phrasing I employed is indeed rather prone to misinterpretation.

I actually meant to say reserving Time Units is what makes it possible to react during the aliens' turn. No saved Time Units, no chance to react.

Thanks, NKF - might not have noticed the fumble otherwise. >:]

Heh, don't mind me. It's almost become an automatic reaction of mine to to explain how the two aren't related now that we know better. Just trying to undo the unintentional damage caused by many years of the two being related in older guides (on-line and published). >:]
