Armchair Arcade does UFO Defense

Found a rather good video review of UFO Defense whilst trawling the forums at Tacticular Cancer - bear with the guy, he does it justice even though he doesn't appear to have gotten very far through his campaign:

The full page at Armchair Arcade can be found here: https://www.armchairarcade.com/neo/node/3282

I love the little captions that pop up over the gameplay ;)

Was rather surprised to see in the comments a reference to there being some sort of strife between JA and X-COM players. Eh? What? Never heard of it. I guess it doesn't help if you're a fan of both games. ;)

Also, is the music in the background when Laser Squad is being presented the one that was actually used in-game? Wish we had that as the battlescape music... Was just listening to some old game music midi files I dug up from the harddrive, and It's amazing how much of a mood setter music can be.

Edit: finally watched all the way through. Pretty good. He was right that he only just scratched the surface of it with what he managed to get in the limited time he had.

Nice find, Pete. :P

It's always great to see a fun intro to Enemy Unknown like this, and with backstory to boot.

I don't know if I've mentioned this one before, but there's an older GameTap clip I've noticed on YouTube which fittingly introduces X-Com in under 2 minutes. In case you haven't seen it:

That would be madness. EU and JA2 are two of the best blends of strategy, turn-based battling, and resource management there has ever been.

This is a non-issue. EU is better.

DOES JA2 HAVE ALIENS?!

Actually I think it does >:] But I play it without, they don't really fit IMO.

I think JA2 is great on its own, and I was a huge fan of the first deadly games as well, me and my friend would play over a dial up modem :oh:

I was very upset that JA2 did not have some type of network support, I couldn't believe it :P

I do like X-Com more, that's for sure, they really hit a perfect note with that, but JA2 is very good as well.

I like the different approaches to the troops in both games. JA2 gives you a load of really memorable characters, and EU offers you blanks that build up a history with you as you play. You get attached either way, even though the scale with EU is completely different.

I particularly like late-game EU, where you've got seasoned troopers who've been with you for years, leading teams of bandwagon-jumping young bucks.

Virgil Carr takes a rookie aside and offers him a towel, just as the new boy is about to go search a farmhouse on his own. "Here ya go, kid, ya got something wet behind ya ears."
