I've been playing Enemy Unknown and TFTD a few times for I guess 15 years? But I never actually finished TFTD because of the research bug. Bought it on steam last week because it's been a few years since my last session, and started reading guides on how to get past the glitching tech tree. That, and finding a site by Stanislaw Linke where you can download files to allow you to research stuff that's glitched out, gave me hope of finally defeating the aliens again.

 

So I read up on the research tree on the wonderful ufopaedia. Specifically the needlessly wordy article by NKF on how to avoid the research tree bug. Thanks for that!

 

I realized I needed to capture some terrorists to get the good stuff, mainly Ion Armor, but also the MC part of the tree. The first terror mission that came up after I had access to Shok Bombs was a lobsterman/bio drone attack though. Poo, since I need Deep One Terrorists.

 

Well, I was pretty surprised when I get back to base and discover that I've managed to capture a live bio drone terrorist. I can't really remember the terror mission itself. Most of the map blew up as I recall, but perhaps I shot one of the drones with shok bombs to avoid another explosion... I do recall manually picking one up because I wanted the corpse, i didn't get corpses from them before, when they attacked my base.

I was even more surprised after researching a bio drone terrorist, because it opened up the MC Lab research! And I think it also opened up ultimate threat (shoddy memory), but that seems wrong, looking at the tech tree? EDIT: It probably is wrong, presumably I researched a navigator just before the biodrone terrorist...

If you shot the Bio Drone out of the air with a shok bomb, you should be able to recover its unconscious body. This occurs because the body drops to the ground but the explosion happens at the original elevation.

 

You don't often capture Bio Drones until well after you've done the Deep One or Calcinite. But then again, the MC Lab research may be unlocked from the Terrorist class rather than specifically by race.

 

Guess we'll have to see if the Xarquid and Triscene yield the same results.
