turb
Hello everyone here!Fine forum. I am planning to play TFTD once again (I've played it in the past few times).I never really search the web for tips clues info about the game earlier, and since I read here that there are some crucial bugs like switch diffculty to begginer, research tree bug etc., I had a question to you guys here, what version do you recommend to start now, Dos w xcomutil, CE with fixes? and which? I am not interested in modding the game I am just looking for the least bugged one. Best regards,
NKF
There's no revert-to-beginner difficulty bug for TFTD, thankfully, though it may feel like superhuman on all the difficulty levels. The research bugs however are present in all versions. They don't have patches, but are easily worked around as long as you research some things in a partciular sequence or that you have some items in storage before you complete certain research topics. The best game is really the one you can run. My only advice is to patch them all to at least v2.0. CE is already 2.0, so if you manage to get the dos version running, find the v2.0 or v2.1 patch and apply them. For your reference, without really spoiling anything, I'll list the key research points you should be aware of when playing the game. The two topics that you must have their related items in storage are Sub Construction and the MC Reader. Sub Construction you should obtain quite easily from intact subs. Just don't sell them all until you've obtained the 'sub construction' research topic after researching all the sub components. Failure to do so will mean you can't go to the final mission. The M.C. Reader on the other hand must be in storage before you complete research on the M.C.-Lab - or just get the 2.1 patch for the Dos edition of the game. Failing to get the MC Reader will only mean that you end up sealing off the MC technology, but will not stop you from beatin the game. The main research topic you have to research in sequence is the Live Deep One. Keep that until after you've resarched Aqua Plastic Armor and Ion Beam Accelarators. There are a few others, but they have means of correcting themselves. The Deep One on the other hand tends to be more problematic. - NKF
sluissa
NKF, are you sure there's no difficulty bug in TFTD? the ufopaedia hosted by this site says there's one that reverts all difficulty to superhuman... but the only source is TVtropes. So it sounds like it's mistaken or simply someone trying to spread lies.
Zombie
There isn't a difficulty bud in TFTD. That bug is only present in the original DOS version of Enemy Unknown. Just an odd bit of info - the reason why TFTD was made so hard was because the people playing with the difficulty bug in EU complained it was too easy on Superhuman. The developers didn't realize that the cause was a bug and thus overcompensated. - Zombie
Bomb Bloke
Any chance of a link to the UFOpedia page(s) in concern, so it can be corrected?

Zombie
Whoever copied/paraphrased the text from TVTropes didn't realize that the listing is wrong about the difficulty bug being present in TFTD (it's not present, reversed or otherwise). At least, I haven't witnessed this in the CE version. - Zombie
Bomb Bloke
They would've read someone (maybe even us!) state that TFTD was made to be "always harder then UFO", then decided that meant "always on the hardest difficulty". Either way, if the rumor were true, we'd know about it by now. It's not like we even play the games any more - we test them. Thanks for the heads up, sluissa.
