Martian Drones

I have finished the game for a second time. I'd like to know what the prerequisites are for that research that lets you use martian drones. I didn't get it this time around.

 

Also, is there a mod around that makes the martians stronger in the strategic game? They were down to 2 territories in my game.

When you salvage drones in the game (random if any you have destroyed are considered 'salvageable'), and bring one of each type home, research topics to examine each should come up. I think you need crawler, levitating and mech to get 'martian drone' research. I don't believe you need spider drone, but I can't remember off hand. And no, unfortunately you can't use the mechs , just the crawlers and levitating drones. I'm fairly sure one of the martian civilization research topics is needed as well as salvaging drones, can't remember which.
