The Avenger has twice the range of the Skyranger. Unfortunately, the Avenger can only patrol 1/16th as long (5 hours vs 82 for the Skyranger). While difficult, the Avenger can patrol long enough to find an alien base. Heck, if you frequently send your fighters to intercept craft in the vicinity of an alien base, you will detect that base without the need to patrol.

I've never had any problem using Interceptors to scout out a base at all. Especially considering that everyone keeps plasma-beam interceptors on hand, right? (Although, recently I've been going plasma beam/laser cannon).

 

But I've found Interceptors to be perfectly fine for scouting out a base. (It helps if you follow a supply ship to its landing site, and patrol nearly overhead the base.)
