The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment in Manhattan, according to the New York City police. Signs pointed to a suicide or an accidental overdose, police sources said. Mr. Ledger was 28.

He starred in both critical and financial successes, including The Patriot, Monster's Ball and Brokeback Mountain, and completed the role of The Joker in the forthcoming The Dark Knight. Ledger was found dead in a New York City apartment in the SoHo neighborhood on January 22, 2008.

He'll be winning sympathy votes galore in the Oscars...

I can't speak for him as a person (People seem to believe he was a great guy, though. Sad.) but I can say I was never much a fan of his acting.

It will make the role of the Joker that much more creepy, knowing the actor is dead. Unfortunately, this means no sequels for him. :oh:

Curious... Anyone know what got him so upset that he took his own life? Usually it takes a lot... Well, these days maybe not.

@Strong Bob - last I heard was that the police still waiting on a cause of death from the coroner's office, and are saying it could have been an accidental overdose.

You do see folks actually in movies and TV shows taking handfuls of pills in complete disregard to what the label says, so that's very much a possibility, especially as he was apparently having trouble sleeping. It's certainly not the best message that Hollywood and the TV networks put out.

Not saying it's not suicide either mind, but nobody can seem to see a reason for that.

I found it a bit difficult to believe that he could overdose on pills accidentally. I imagine everyone would be sane enough to just take one or two and know that hitting yourself with a lot would get you killed.

But a friend pointed out something I didn't think of. Perhaps he took one, then when it didn't work another, then another and slowly but surely...

Still, it's best to wait for the police to do their job.

I take Melatonin as a sleep aid, myself. But after doing some online studying, you really can't overdose on that stuff without REALLY trying. (People can take up to six times their recommended dosage and suffer no negative effects.) Now, melatonin is a natural hormone that affects your eyes more than anything. But if overdosing is so hard on something like that, what is in these sleeping pills that would make it so easy to accidentaly overdose?

I wonder exactly what brand of sleeping pill he was taking for that matter... If it was just "one, then another" until the stuff started working then I'm at a serious loss as to how dangerous such a drug could be, to be so ineffective after so many pills, and still be deadly.
