Azrael Strife
Hey, I wanted someone's opinion on this, I've been thinking of getting a Nintendo GameCube. First off, the Wii is not a possibility, as it's surely going to be more expensive than I'm willing to pay (at least here). So, for those of you who have one, is it worth buying? I'm very looking forward to playing games like Mario Sunshine, Super Paper Mario, Metroid Prime, Smash Brothers Melee (this particularly), Mario Kart, Zelda (all of them), Final Fantasy, etc, etc. What do you say? FullAuto
I've had one for a wee while now, and it's been a bloody good investment. There's a lot of good games for it, they're all cheap as chips (even cheaper now the Wii has come out) and they'll only get cheaper. Mario Sunshine is pretty good (awkward camera, though), so is Paper Mario, Metriod Prime 1&2 are both great adventure games (can't understand the lack of dual-stick control, though) and Smash Bros and Mario Kart I'm a huge fan of, especially in multiplayer. I have yet to play a bad Zelda game, but FF:CC isn't my cup of tea. Viewtiful Joe, Ikaruga and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem are also worth a look. Bomb Bloke
I have two: The first I bought near launch, and it cost roughly $250AU. The second one I got more recently, and it cost $85AU. Melee rocks and can even be played online, thanks to hacker efforts. I actually unlocked everything in that game (with the exception of two trophies you require a cheat device to get), but then my memory card died... Taking years of save games with it. I also recommend Tales of Symphonia, and the Sonic games.
FullAuto
I'd also add Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance to that list. Excellent turn-based tactical game.
Strong Bob
It depends on your taste I suppose. The Gamecube actually always struck me as harboring very 'simple' games, and mostly stuff for children. The only thing it really seems to be useful for, is multiplayer games. Otherwise, just about anything singleplayer seems to strike me as overly easy and built for younger players, or players that don't want to do a lot of "thinking". (Metroid Prime, for example, was a real dissapointment for me. I was expecting something to challenge me like it's predecessors. But unfortunately I felt a bit 'babied' the way it was carried.) I bought mine well over a year ago. I regret the purchase because I think I only played it for about a month before moving exclusively to my PC and X-BOX360. I only recently started playing the 'Cube again, and that's only because of the new Zelda game. But I predict that my Gamecube will end up right back in the closet, collecting dust, as soon as I finish it. Currently, my longest hours on the Gamecube were spent playing Starfox Assault and Zelda: Twilight Princess. The only two games I can say rate very well for me. Meh, a thing of style I suppose. The Gamecube is very popular in it's own right, and not a bad console. But if you're more interested in games more strategic in nature, you may be dissapointed. I, personally, wish I spent my 100 USD on something else.
Ego Terrorist
Just remember that the Wii console is (according to my mates) backwards compatible with the Gamecube, from controllers, to memory cards to games. Thus my advice to you is either buy a really cheap Gamecube, or buy a new Wii, and be able to play the new games and the old games on the *dramatic voice* "Console of the Future"
Stun Grenade
Yes I would agree with Ego Terrorist but you can get them that cheap these days there would be no point in waiting for the Wii to drop down in price. Plus, Zelda: TP just came out for it so I would recommend getting that first =] And BB, why do you need/want two consoles?
Bomb Bloke
I picked up the extra in a second hand shop. There aren't that many systems around so if my original gets busted, it saves me hunting for a new one. It was hard enough finding the games - Metroid Prime sold out about five times in my town before I got a copy. That probably had something to do with there being only one store in town stocking it, and them only ordering in something like five copies at a time. There never was much demand for GameCube gear, so the supply dropped accordingly. I also have two X-Boxes, for more or less the same reason. Though in that case, the original broke before I picked up the extra. Spare X-Box consoles aren't that hard to find either. On another note, there are actually two versions of the GameCube: The original (a rather small design which takes mini-discs), and the later Panasonic version (slightly larger, and capable of playing DVD movies). Azrael Strife
Alright, after much chin stroking and drooling I've decided to get me a Cube! I recently found one cheap enough ($140 slightly used, new it's about $300, insane huh?), and decided on getting the following games in the following priority: Mario Sunshine (cannot help it, Mario is a classic, I MUST have it), Smash Bros Melee (I've been playing Smash Bros for the past 5 years nonstop, need an upgrade asap), Metroid Prime (don't need a reason, do I?), Mario Kart (another classic, great for playing with my friends), and at least one Mario Party, then I'll lay my claws on some Zeldas, sooner or later! Cannot wait.. edit: Just thought of something... is it possible to save my progress in, say, Mario Sunshine or Metroid Prime without getting a memory card first? Bomb Bloke
You need a memory card to save, period. The system has no onboard permanent memory.
Space Voyager
I feel a need to interfere... There are great simple games for PC, so why buy gamecube, Wii etc? BTW, we've just had a great debate on PC/consoles at anohter forum, so don't tempt me. I can CnP a lot of material!
Strong Bob
Well, my prediction from almost a year ago proved to be correct. After Zelda: The Twilight Princess, my Gamecube has sat under my TV and has not been switched on ever since. Whereas I've used my X-BOX360 several times a week, and gamed on my PC almost daily. Yeah... I don't think the Gamecube is quite for everyone.

If you don't know, there'll be no telling you. Yeah... I don't think the Gamecube is quite for everyone. Nothing is. All a matter of taste, apparently. Azrael Strife
I feel a need to interfere... There are great simple games for PC, so why buy gamecube, Wii etc? BTW, we've just had a great debate on PC/consoles at anohter forum, so don't tempt me. I can CnP a lot of material! There are, but there are also some great games for the cube. Also, a big reason is on the PC I simply have a real hard time finding good games I can play decently with my friends, as a matter of fact, for the last five years the top three games I've played with my friends are: 1) Smash Brothers, 2) Mario Kart 64, 3) Mario Party 3, all of them running on an N64 emulator, and we've played them uncountable times, PC games include only Heroes of Might and Magic III, but we always get bored of hotseating and never finish a game. So, another reason despite the really good games I can find for the cube is that I can easily play with my friends On another note, getting an XBox360 is not even an option, most new consoles are prohibitively expensive, with even the PS2 being at $400 new, it's madness! the PS3 is over $1200... Azrael Strife
Proud owner of a gamecube now got myself a memory card, Mario Sunshine and Smash Brothers Melee, in the process of acquiring a second controller and as soon as budget allows, Metroid Prime and Zelda: Wind Waker
FullAuto
One thing that's frustrating is that retailers here in the UK didn't support the GameCube, yet will happily charge ridiculous prices for certain games which still have a certain cachet. It's a bit irritating. I was looking forward to using my Wii to enjoy the back catalogue. But if I did, I'd be paying more for GC games than Wii games. Even though I'm buying the Wii games new, and the GC games are at least second hand. And the GC games are usually several years old. Bah. D'you hear? Bah.
