uriaheep
Anyone had trouble running dosbox after a computer upgrade? New board and processor but same HD. Oh, and upgraded OS - XP. It's run great until this upgrade. First time out the window was elongated but after a shutdown and reboot it won't work at all. Any ideas before I re-download? Three days without X-Com and I'm shaking.
Vargone
Which version of dosbox? .65? Are you using a front-end. Did you upgrade the os or reinstall?
Bomb Bloke
I can only recommend re-installing. Make sure you uninstall the old version first. Though quite frankly I don't know why you'd want to use DosBox. There are Windows versions of the first two games, and the third X-Com title runs better without DosBox too. uriaheep
It's a complete reinstall. I guess I'll have to reinstall Dosbox again. I see what you mean BB but the versions I have are the originals and there's something nostalgic about playing them. Mmm, maybe it's time to change. Thanks chaps. Azure
Definitly uninstall/reinstall DOSbox...remember, DOSbox emulates a computer, but that virtual computer has to use the hardware you actually have. By changing the mobo, you very likely completely changed the hardware resources that DOSbox EXPECTS to be available, so its no wonder it don't work... You might wanna save a copy of your DOSbox.conf file (especially if you will be reinstalling the same version of DOSbox) so you can see what settings worked for you before... BB, as for why use DOSbox, well, because it can run xcom at speeds that are reasonably close to correct...I hate when the game runs at warp speed... uriaheep
I got the thing up and running but I still get the odd 'freeze' and a 'stickyness' when I enter the soldiers equipment screen. I've always had these problems but only since running with dosbox. As to speeds, yeah I couldn't play it if ti was any faster than it is now. Bomb Bloke
Those stickiness glitches are part of the Dos version of the game. I've had the same problem occur on real hardware. Not sure which bit of hardware caused it, though.
uriaheep
I thought it was the graphics card but I've upgraded that too and it's exactly the same. I don't mind it that much, it kinda' gives the game an edge. I just save a hell of a lot.
Bomb Bloke
Actually, now that my memory gets into gear, that inventory stickiness only happened when I ran the game in Dos mode. Booting into Windows and running the game from there solved the problem.
uriaheep
I don't follow - Booting into windows?
Bomb Bloke
Real hardware, remember? A computer suited for UFO doesn't run Windows XP. No, instead it runs something like Windows '95. Which means you don't have to boot to Windows when you turn the machine on, which means you can have UFO running about ten seconds after you've powered up the computer. uriaheep
Gotcha. I seem to remember that when I first played the game I was running windows 3.1, on floppy!! Ah, those good ole' days of steam pc's. What ever happened to 51/4 inch floppy drives? Smell the nostalga.
Knan
Ah, those good ole' days of steam pc's. What ever happened to 51/4 inch floppy drives? Threw mine away about... three months ago. Last used it... five years ago, perhaps? They were last produced around 1992 or so, I figure.
Bomb Bloke
Well, I used to have mine plugged in, but then that machine had some heat issues. That is to say, there wasn't enough room left in the case to put your hand in. So now it's in a box. But I still know where it is.
uriaheep
This probably needs a new topic, Who's got the oldest piece of kit?
