Bomb Bloke
I may write a fic one day. "Uh, Sarge, that's a primed grenade you'r holding..." "Don't worry, so long as I hold this little button here it won't go off." "So, what happens if you get shot?" "Well, you see, that's kinda the point..." I used to save and load. None of my troops would ever die. This was only really for sentimental reasons, but one day I hardened and now my troops go down. It's a lot easier this way then getting them all home every time. Try getting through the game without losing a single man. Saving and loading allowed, it's still a begger to do.
The Demi-Godly One
I've gone through a game without losing anyone, even without loading. (Except for the occasional save for when it was bed-time and load when I could play again.) Mind you, I did the cheapest strategies around, played the easiest difficulty, used psi powers, used laser rifles all the way through, and didn't go to terror sites, but that's beside the point! I still want to brag!

Stewart
Whenever I play UFO, I always reserve a save game slot for the start of every groung mission and a few others for interesting events. I always reload the saves when I lose a team member. Is this considered cheating or being creative in the tactics dept? Technically, it is not cheating as the game allows it. Morally, it's debateable.
Ki-tat Chung
well, there isn't a reload button in battlescape. but on the same note, there isn't a quit button either. there is both on apoc, so theres my $0.01. wait, isn't it $0.02? Bomb Bloke
Just wondering, has anyone achieved a commander yet? What was it, 120 troops in your employment, or something... Try pulling that off without loading. Possible, of course, but good luck to ya...
NKF
Quantity. Oh, and experience. The savegame for my solo floater base challenge thingy only has 58 soldiers in current employment (though I've probably employed many more prior to that on account of playing by ironman rules). My third most successful soldier in that campaign is a commander. I think it's just a matter of making sure that every soldier you employ gets some combat experience (i.e. manages to successfully shoot at an enemy). Rotate your experienced soldiers with rookies, replace all the experienced soldiers that you lose and eventually, a commander will rise from the ranks. - NKF
Stewart
Are you saying you can have a Commander without ever having (what is it?) 30 soldiers or something at one time. Maybe it counts soldiers that have EVER served. If you can have a commander without ever reaching a critical number of troops but with experience alone, I should think that could be tested with a save game editor. Bomb Bloke
No, promotions only come when you have live troops. You replace the dead regardless, and then rank them up. But, uh, oops, no, I got confused, thought I was in the Apoc section. https://www.angelfire.com/games3/jeffy90/images/smilies/blush.gif Generally in UFO I stick with ten soldiers, till I want to go to Cydonia, then I build more living quarters and hire soldiers in bulk. Your troops get promotions really quickly then. I got a small surpise when I got several commanders in TFTD, but then I remembered the naval ranking system... https://www.angelfire.com/games3/jeffy90/images/smilies/sarcastic.gif But anyway, who has an APOCALYPSE commander? kai
How do the promotions work in TFTD? As far as I know you can have several commanders in UFO but only one aquanaut of the highest rank in TFTD? BTW, when you say solo fdloater base do you mean s ?ending one soldier in Special forces style ?
NKF
The promotions in TFTD work the same way - they just have different names. I've never personally had more than one commander in UFO - and I do tend to use a lot of soldiers in either game. Secondly, yes a solo floater base assault simply means sending one soldier to attack a floater base. - NKF
Bomb Bloke
In TFTD, the naval ranking system is used (as I said before https://www.angelfire.com/games3/jeffy90/images/smilies/sarcastic.gif). The Commander becomes the second highest rank, and the Captian is on top. Boats, people! So... I take it no one has had an Apoc commander, then?
