Accounting Troll
Okay, it's probably time to start profiling our main characters. Don't bother profiling charcters who are only there to have a couple of lines of dialogue or get killed off without being missed by anybody. Remember to edit your character profiles as your characters evolve or get killed off Name: Mark ReynoldsControlled by: Accounting Troll Joined X-Com on: March 17th, 2039Rank: Able SeamanCurrent assignment: Alpha BaseStatus: still aliveAge: 30Nationality: Principality of Wales, European Syndicate With a scientific background, Mark was transferred to SORESO to assist in the investigation of the causes of the so-called Mary Celeste sinkings before the war began. He has no prior military experience, unless one counts a few hours spent training with a dart gun. However he is willing to do his bit. His scientific background may make him something of an oddity among the other X-Com soldiers in the coming months, however anybody who survives several missions against the aliens is going to have their respect. His paternal grandmother was killed in the first alien war, so he is looking forward to settling a few old scores.
The Veteran
Name: Andrew MuntControlled by: The Veteran Joined X-Com on: July 15th 2036Rank: Able SeamanCurrent assignment: Experimental Underwater Facility 01Status: immortalAge: 23Nationality: England, European Syndicate Though Andrew has no real experience to speak of, he enlisted with XCom as soon as his age allowed him to. His paternal grandparents had both fought in the First Alien War allowing Andrew to be one of a very select few who actually volunteered to join XCom after much of the world had been convinced it no longer existed. Growing up to stories of Nanny and Grandpa's incredible adventures 40 odd years ago inspired Andrew and he'd been waiting his whole life to have an adventure of his own but the last 4 years of monotonous reccies and routine cleanups have really drained his enthusiasm. Now with another alien invasion fast approaching only time will tell how Andrew will cope with his own very different war...

Zager
Character name: Dr Patrick Zager Description: Patrick Zager is an elderly man, at the age of ninety-five with short white hair, and a frail, physical body. He gets around mostly by wheelchair these days. His eyes are solid purple, a side affect of the elerium solution he injected into himself during the first alien war. A series of wires can be seen running out of the back of his head and down his back, the result of a psi-amp he had surgically implanted in himself. Background: Dr Patrick Zager was a scientists during first alien war. He originally signed on to help provide a power source for X-COM's research into laser weaponry, he soon found a niche in psionics research, which he believed to hold the key to humanities next level of evolution. Unlike most humans his age, his mental faculties are fully intact, and in fact, stronger than they ever were before in his life. This is a direct result of his research into psionics. He is widely considered to be the most powerful psionic alive, having essentially created the discipline himself. He trained the original psi-corps for X-COM, which was integral in ensuring the victory of humanity. When X-COM went public after the war, Zager began training psionics from regular society, but was forced to put a stop to this due to the diminishing supply of elerium needed, as well as the international ban on psionics. He disappeared off the public scene after that, apparantly retiring, but in reality, setting up a private research base in Antartica to continue his research into the human brain and its functions outside of the juridstiction of meddling politicans who had no comprehension of the true nature of his research. Joining him were the best psionics the world had to offer, his own private little cadre of mentalists, and one of the largest remaining supplies of Elerium on the planet. Now that the alien threat has resurfaced, so as Zager. He's returned to offer his services as the new head scientist of X-COM.
uriaheep
Name: Alexander MilneControlled by: Uriaheep Joined X-Com on: October 4th 2030Rank: Combat EngineerCurrent assignment: X-Com Flight Maintenance Facility - Europe.Status: Currently filed application to Combat Unit.Age: 35Nationality: Scottish, European Syndicate Alex joined X-Com almost by accident, he had been a Flight Engineer for the European Syndicates Army Transport Unit working on outdated Skyrangers considering a change of career. When SORESO required someone to take over their supply transport maintenance duties due to the death of their Chief Engineer in a helicopter crash, he was the obvious choice to maintain their small but tired supply craft. He is now utterly bored with the situation and has asked for transfer. Though he has studied old videos and read a great deal about the First Alien War the only alien he has ever seen is the one that is the centrepiece of a battle scene in Madame Tussauds museum in London. The thought of actually seeing one face to face scares the life out of him.
Dumb_Commander
Name: Scot GasvinCallname: none yetControled by: Dumb_Commander and everybody Joined X-Com on: August 19th 2039Rank: SquadieCurrent assignment: Experimental Underwater Facility 01 (EUF 01)Status: AliveAge: 29Nationality: America Gasvin was brought to X-Com to be a pilot, until his close quarters combat potential was discovered. Before joining X-Com, Scot was a police officer that had an knack meeting dangerous oppnents, and because of that he meet a sectoid/human hybrid, Scot barely survived the meeting, he wanted to tell the goverment about that, at that time X-Com arived on the scene and took him to EUF 01. Now Scot Gasvin works for X-Com, while trying not to freak out, his meeting with the hybrid got him a permanet psyhical scar. EDIT: I edited Gasvin's background. The Veteran
Sounds good DC. Be careful with the sectoid though. The liklihood of any 100% aliens surviving after Cydonia is vitually zero. The Roswell like society described in Interceptor were all hybrids, alien-human half breeds. I reckon it's most likely that Scott met one of these guys. So yes alien but slightly less pronounced so maybe it would have scarred and confused him. Might also have left him rather eager to discover what it was he really met so XCom could help him find out! Dumb_Commander
Name: Michael CellmanCallname: Tears (SWAT Callname)Controled by: Dumb_Commander and The Veteran Joined X-Com on: December 21th 2040Rank: None yetCurrent assignment: Alpha BaseStatus: AliveAge: 46Nationality: American Mr. Cellman is a sad example of a man who lost almost everything. Born on 1994, in a regular neibhorhood and being a quiet little kid. At 20 year, Michael already finished school and had two years in a university. Then at 29 came the marriage, a woman he desribed as beatiful. Like all that were in love. To get good paycheck Cellman started to work as a honest policeman. Truth to be told, he was probably the only NYPD cop that was honest. For that he earned couple of enemies. Suddenly, when he was 34, someone bombed his house. His wife and newborn kid, were found dead. Cellman went into the deep end. Drinking himself to the ground. But still continued his work as a cop. A moth after the death of his family he, was suddenly transfered to SWAT department. No doubt, that he asked a honest favor. After that his drinking stoped, but he never got over the death of his family. Description: Standing 180 cm tall, short black hair and a constant sad look on his face. The body is well toned with barely seeable muscles. Is proficient with light weight pistols and rifles. Good in hand to hand combat.
The Veteran
It's not often I'm as blunt as I'm about to be DC but trust me, Gavsin did NOT meet an aquatoid... He has now but he hadn't before he joined up it just wouldn't have happened. These guys have only come out of the water to raid ships so far, they aren't going to be wandering around cities chatting to cops. The chance of him meeting a hybrid is much higher, by the time of Apocalypse ther are a l;ot of them about... Right now though he definitely will not have seen an Aquatoid. Simple as that, it just wouldn't have happened... Also, on a more constructive criticism point, I would strongly advise against having your new character with such a similar employment history to Gavsin... Gavsin met a hybrid, reported it, got fast-tracked to XCom. Totally believable and realistic. Cellman saw an abduction, less likely, you don't really tend to see abductions, you're generally either abducted or asleep! Or stumbling around drunk... Besides these guys don't do abductions. They experiment on sea creatures not the typical cows. Sure they experiment on humans, but that's where all the ships are going! These guys have taken down aircraft carriers and cruise liners with full crew compliments... Why would they risk travelling to land when they really don't need to? Also, XCom wouldn't know that he'd seen this even if he had, if they found out, most likely he'd be subjected to some MIB style psionic brain tuning that wiped the memories and convinced him he saw a plane or something... It's not like Gavsin who actually had a combat encounter with an alien, this guy saw a UFO. How many million people have seen UFOs? In the real world how many thousand people claim to have been abducted? He'd be wiped under the carpet. Fair enough he's SWAT, Gavsin's job as a cop would have helped his acceptance into XCom. Cellman's as SWAT will do the same but the 'I saw an alien' story won't wash with two characters. Once is a good thing, twice is repetitive, boring and unconvincing, not to mention lacking in imagination... Sorry DC but them's the breaks! If you want a hand with character building, plot development or even just how to construct a general post to an acceptable standard just ask and I'll be happy to give you some pointers! Conclusion of this post though, Gavsin saw a hybrid, not an Aquatoid. Cellman was recruited because of his job as SWAT. He was already in a fairly highly rated enforcement job and he was obviously good enough at it to be recommended or head-hunted. I'd suggest recommended by his superior. It's more modest on your part and noone wants to see a superhero character. If I do, they'll be gone before the post is even up!
Accounting Troll
If we bump up the age of the SWAT guy to his early sixties, we can say that he went up against the aliens a couple of times in terror attacks on his hometown in the last alien war. It can sometimes take X-Com hours to respond to a terror attack, so it's believable that local police and army would have a go at the aliens to try to give the civilians time to escape, but they would probably take heavy casualties. X-Com might be interested in getting in veterans of the first Alien War like him as NCOs to stiffen the resolve of a squad. A couple of suggestions about bringing in new characters as soldiers: Deep sea diving is dangerous at the best of times, so X-Com will only recruit soldiers who have a reasonable amount of diving experience. They don't the time and resources to give anybody basic diving lessons and such people would be a liability for the rest of the squad in a mission. The SWAT veteran would only be recruited if he has some diving experience, whether as a hobby or as part of his job (the police and the army both use divers). X-Com doesn't need to recruit somebody just to keep him from telling everybody that he has encountered aliens from the second wave because the public is aware that hostile aliens tried to conquer Earth 40 years earlier, and X-Com was revived as a result of public concern that the high profile sinkings mean that the aliens are back. In TFTD and the later games, X-Com has the status of the modern British SAS. Everybody knows that they exist and they are elite troops, but the exact nature of their operations are shrouded in secrecy for security reasons. Accounting Troll
Name: Ali HusseinAge: 63Nationality: Jordan, Arabian BlocRank: Recruiting sergeantLocation: off banging the recruiting drum for X-ComJoined X-Com: 1999 - 2010, January 2040Controlled by: anybody Ali Hussein was transferred to X-Com from the Jordanian Army in the early months of the First Alien War. He served with distinction during the campaign and was one of the soldiers who took part in the decisive Battle of Cydonia. He is a devout muslim, however the years he spent with other X-Com personnel from across the world convinced him that the radical Islamic clerics who constantly preach for holy war against the West are themeselves un-Islamic because they have tossed aside Muslim notions of tolerance. Also, being an experienced soldier, he has noticed that the clerics refuse to lead by example and risk thier lives for their religion. Having trodden the dry soil of Mars, he found it impossible to adjust to civilian life after the war. He soon found employment as a mercenary soldier in various conflicts across the globe. His exact activities over the next thirty years are shrouded in mystery, but it is known that he only fought for a cause that he regarded as ethically sound, as opposed to whoever had the most money, and that he is a wanted man in the Arabian Bloc because he has helped train recruits for the Jewish Liberation Organisation. He is known to be something of a loner. In 2029, a conspiracy theorist claiming to be an X-Com veteran wrote an ebook claiming that Ali Hussein had commanded an X-Com expedition sent to wipe out an alien nest on Phobos and that the action was covered up by the world leaders so the public would continue to think that the aliens were defeated once and for all at Cydonia. He has denied this claim. Although the exact truth of the matter is unknown, it is is known that Ali didn't see a cent of the tens of millions of dollars the book generated in sales. When the UN decided to reactivate X-Com to deal with the new alien threat, he offered his services as a recruitment sergeant. As a veteran X-Com trooper with contacts among mercenary and national troops, he could be invaluble at finding new recruits with the skills X-Com needs. storm turmoil
Hi. Me again, do you think I could bring David Brown back into the picture as an engineering consultant? ( check the Ufo fanfic.) After all, as a veteran of the original alien conflict and with experience of alien technology, his insight could be valuable. of course, he'll be getting on a bit, but as long as he stays in the workshops, that should be ok, unless the base gets raided... besides, the thought of him and Zager arguing over old times is priceless! so: Name: David BrownControlled by: Storm Turmoill Joined X-Com : original Alien warPosition: EngineerCurrent assignment: in transitStatus: still aliveAge: 66Nationality: former United Kingdom. Appearance:Hair: still red, darkening to drown at the roots.eyes: brown, hidden behind tinted glasses.6'3" tall.Prominent burn scars on left hand and arm Formerly hunted down by X-Inv agents during the early stages of the first Alien war, David Brown was picked out for being an alleged alien abuction victim. What X-Inv (later X-Com) didn't know was that his alleged abduction was really a fake. What he himself didn't know was that his abduction being fake was fake... What X-com later managed to piece together was that he was a test subject apparently targeted exclusively by Sectoids in one of a series of experiments concealed not only from the subject via chemical memory suppression -rather than the more usual, and usually more reliable Psionic methods used- , and from human observers, but also from their supposed superiors the Ethereals. The exact nature of the experiments is unknown, but it is suspected by many- including fellow alien war veteran scientist Patrick Zager- that it was an attempt to create weapons for use not only against humans, but also against other alien species as well, most particularly Ethereals. This is suspected because of Brown's unusual psionic potential...or rather lack of it. Brown is not only incapable of the most basic psionic phenomena, including ones normally requiring no native latent psionic potential at all, but is also completely immune to the effects of outside psionic activity as well, rendering him a kind of psionic 'dead zone'. As such, he is somewhat of the antithesis of Zager, as humanities greatest known psionic. However, he refused to cooperate with Zager's psionic research in the matter, and tension between the two remains high, though both concede the prescence of a common enemy. In terms of actual contributions, Brown played a somewhat haphazard role in the adaptation of several alien weapons during the first war, including the use of alien plasma weapons. he was also involved in development of Earth analogues to Alien technologies. While not a combat trooper, David did take part in the Cydonia expedition as field armourer, although he stayed with the avenger spacecraft and did not take part in combat. David's greatest asset is his mechanical intuition. While he doesn't have a great head for mathematics or even basic physics, he has an almost instinctive way with machines, which ocaisionally allows him to make wild leaps of logic about otherwise unfathomable machines. He also has knack for fake artefacts, both spotting them and fabricating them, and was an important part of the first alien war spin control team. Two years were spent with the UN Intelligence Corps where he was highly regarded by his commanding officer as being able to deal with reporters. He was promoted to Major and then moved to the UN's Quick Response Unit where he worked as Liaison to several Ambassadors during crisis points. He became the face of the UN on many broadcasts especially an incident where Bellorussian Terrorists captured a nuclear waste treatment plant in the Anti Globalisations Conflicts. Before joining X-Com, she commanded a European naval taskforce before being promoted to an administration job with the Admiralty. Her command style is authoritarian and somewhat abrasive. She is critical of General Genega's command style in the last alien war, feeling that he should have imposed considerably greater discipline on the people under his command. It is likely that she will be more respected than liked. She is frequently tactless; her response to the squad that won X-Com's first victory in the current conflict was to bawl them out for not being professional soldiers, something that did not go down too well with the squad members. Her biggest weakness is that she is something of a conservative thinker, and it remains to be seen whether she is up to conducting a war that is going to be very different to the sort of war she has been trained to fight. She is unmarried and has no children as starting a family would have impeded her career. It is unlikely that she will have a romantic relationship with anybody under her command as she would see that as unprofessional.
Zager
Name: Sato TagachiAge: 36Description: A Japanese gentleman, standing at about five feet five inches tall, with black hair and blue eyes. Deceptively strong for his size, Sato is in very good shape, a combination of constant exercise and a healthy diet, as well as rigorous practice in half a dozen different styles of martial arts. Background: Sato is a professional military diver and underwater demolitions expert formally working for the Japanese Defense Forces. He's mostly had to deal with terrorist attacks from Chinese supernationalists, as well as the increase in general terrorist activety in the world as a result of the seperation of Alaska from the United States. He's very good at what he does, and works as a weaponsmith off duty, happily maintaining, building, repairing and customizing a wide variety of firearms. While technically against military policy, his squadmates, the recepients of his special customizations, never reported him. After all, they were heavily benefiting from his work. The highlight of his career was four year ago, when he and his squad entered a Disney vacation cruiser that had been taken over by a radical Chinese terrorist group, and neutralized the terrorst, while disarming over a dozen bombs that had planted on the exterior hull of the ship, saving over seven hundred lives in the process. A good soldier, he retired two years previously to spend more time with his wife and children. He runs a fishing boat now, as well as teaching a diving class and assisting at a local dojo in order to pay the bills. However, given the sudden, urgent need for experts in underwater combat, it's very likely that certain recruiters are going to be paying him a visit in the near future in his home in neo-Japan. Tepid tasoth
Uh OK, I'll give the TFTD fanfic a try. I apologize for all spelling errors and gramatically mishaps. Name: Gerhard "Troopi" HafnerControlled by: me, but since I'm not a good writer, does anybody want to join? Joined X-Com on: depends, I thought of him as a replacement for fallen X-COM agentsRank: SeamanCurrent assignment: Feldwebel [seargent] at the Bundeswehr [German army]Status: alive and kickingAge: 26Nationality: German Size: 1,86 m (6 foot 1 inch)Weight: 90 kg (198 pounds) Background:Born in 2014 in Altenkirchen, in the Westerwald, Gerhard always liked Nature and hiking around the countryside. He's able to sneak up at almost any wildlife animal to watch its grace and beauty. Later in his life, he joined the Bundeswehr because he enjoyed the mile long marches around the countryside and is probably the only soldier that ever did.Due to his size and weight they gave him the squad's cumbersome but powerful machine gun. He didn't like it that much in the beginning, but stuck w/ it because he was amazed by its rate of fire and accuracy. Being a really good marksman, his excellent eyesight even at night allows him to hit pretty much anything no matter how small it is. Except when using a pistol. He hates those flimsy inaccurate devices and they're probably not worth the metal they're made of anyway! When he said to his loughing fellow soldiers that he'd rather throw a pistol at the enemy than shoot him w/ it, that wasn't a joke at all. Gerhard's parents died when he was 21. They were enjoying a holiday vacation on a cruise ship which sank under suspicious circumstances. Most of his spare time consist of learning Mathematics and Physics for his study at the night school. If he isn't studying, he's around w/ his Heavy Metal buddies back then from school, drinking beer, listening to Iron Maiden or modding their bikes and cars. His buddies nicknamed him "Troopi" , a reference not only to his favourite song "The Trooper" but also to his military career. He's a social guy but that doesn't mean he drinks that much at all. Phew, I hope I didn't forget anything important? Edit: yeah, I did. Gerhard speaks excellent English, a little Spanish and obviously German.
