Jh316
Okay, I understand what I'm supposed to do...But when I double-click on ldr_XCOM1, my UFO.exe isn't showing up on the list of things to open, just the other files.
Pete
Rename the UFO.exe file to UFO Defense.exe and double click on the loader file again. Game should run. But check and see if you've got the loader file and the other file out of the xcom1 directory and have put them into your main UFO directory. Jh316
Nope. I just noticed something...My Terror from the Deep one says it's an MS-DOS Application, while the UFO says it's an MS-DOS Batch File.
Pete
So the UFO one starts with UFO.bat? Sounds like you've got the DOS versions to me...
Jh316
It's not the Dos version. It came packed with Apocalypse and TftD, on a CD, that said soemthing about Windows 95 on it.
Pete
So did the loader actually load the game?
Jh316
Nope. The loader isn't reading either UFO or Terror. It just pops up to a screen where I can select what to open, and neither of them are on it.
Jh316
Oh well...I wish I wasn't an idiot when I was 11. I got a copy of X-Com for the PSX, and I gave it away when my playstation broke. Havn't found another since. It even had the instructions in good condition, too! Bah. Even if I had it working for the PC, I'm sure I could sell a copy of the game for PSX with the instructions and original case for a good bit to someone. Pete
So... just to check everything's set up like I've got it here, you unzipped the fodder patch and put all the files and folders in your collector's edition folder, copied the contents of xcom1 folder to the UFO directory, copied the contents of the xcom2 folder to the TFTD direcrtory and it didn't load them. And... you tried renaming UFO.exe to UFO Defense.exe (bloomin' foreign spelling!) and the TFTD exe file (don't know what yours might be called) to Terror From the Deep.exe? That should have it working perfectly...
Jh316
Yes to all of the above, save the working perfectly part. Okay...Well, any way to ge the Dos version to work on XP? Maybe there was some sort of weird mix-up, even though the case clearly said collecter's edition... Then again, if it is the DOS version, why does TftD work fine, other than crashes and no music? NKF
Could you please tell us the file size of the executables you're trying to run? For both UFO and TFTD. Humour me, please, for I work in mysterious ways[1]. - NKF [1] Probably not in very helpful ways, I'll tell you that much.
Jh316
Um, the UFO one is 1KB, and the Terror one is 2KB. And also, I do have a way to fix the music problem in Terror. If I run it with VDMSound, the music works, but then the sound effects stop. Wait, that's the estimated size it shows. Here's the actual size. Terror: 1.19 KB UFO: 308 bytes
NKF
Aye, those are the dos versions alright. The executable for UFO Collectors Edition is roughly 484kb. The Dos version of TFTD's only a kb bigger because they converted UFO's batch file into a .com file. Just hides the main game loop from the player. - NKF
Jh316
What the hell's the Dos version doing packaged with Apocalypse?
NKF
Because Apocalypse is also a dos game (and it still is in the Collectors Edition). Mind you, because MS-Dos was becoming old technology very quickly, most distributors at the time just slapped Windows 95 on the covers of the games. Probably didn't want to sound like they were still in the stone age when everyone else is using cutting-edge technology. - NKF
Jh316
That's bloody false advertising. The site we ordered it from clearly labled it as "Collector's Edition", and I'm pretty sure the box did, too.
Alan
There are two collectors editions. One has ufo, tftd, and apoc. the other has ufo, tftd, apoc, interceptor, and email x-com. the second (bigger) one is the one containing the windows versions of ufo. if yuou can then grab a copy of it... it tends to work more often. anyway... making the dos version go..... *searches for old soldout edition of UFO*damnit, why can't i find things when i need them! anyway, you missdat folder in the ufo directory... how many files are in it?there should be somewhere around 40 i think. and it should be about 67.0KB. i ask because a simmilar problem happened when i weas playing my old version (before i got CE) it crashed whenever a base was placed, and said it was missing files. of course this was in 98 so what with you using XP the full error message may be lost or summut.... anyway, if it is that then it's solveable. Jh316
There's 33 files, and 47 K. Do you have AIM? If so, think you could send me the files I need, once I say what I have? If not, I'll have to clean out my inbox. Anyway, I have ACT5.dat, AKNOW.dat, ALIEN.dat, ASTORE.dat, BASE.dat, BPROD.dat, CRAFT.dat, DIPLOM.dat, DUM.bin, FACIL.dat, GEODATA.dat, IGLOB.dat, INTER.dat, LEASE.dat, LIGLOB.dat, LOC.dat, MISSION.dat, MISSIONS.dat, OBPOSREF.dat, PRODUCT.dat, PROJECT.dat, PURCHASE.dat, RESEARCH.dat, SAVEINFO.dat, SOLDIER.dat, TRANSFER.dat, UIGLOB.dat, UNIPOS.dat, UNIREF.dat, UP.dat, XBASES.dat, XCOM.dat, and ZONAL.dat
NKF
All the files in the missdat directory are just temporary files. You can safely delete them and the game will regenerate them when necessary. - NKF
Alan
yes, we kow this.... be for some reason it complains occasionally if said dir is empty. thus sticking stuff there makes it go. As odd as it sounds it worked. for me that is when i tried it. basically what i did was: 1.start up ufo2. goto load3. load an empty slot (odd, but it works)4. save without doing anything. (no base,no nothing)5. copy the savegame folder where you saved it into missdat folder. it follows about the same logic that makes HEX stop working if you forget to initialise the FTB.... but it might work.(terry pratchett reference: the HEX (think discworld take on a pc) stops working if you take away it's fluffy teddy bear) anyway, NKF knows more about ufo than me... so yes, listen to him. NKF
And to think it started off as a calculator that could calculate simple things like 2+2 = 4... Well, there might be something to that. I did hear that some people solved this problem by loading a savegame with a base that's already been placed. Actually, I have the same base crash problem with the collectors edition on my older computer. I guess it just does this on certain computer setups. Never really thought about trying it (loading a file) myself, because CE locks the old computer up rather than crashing to the desktop or returning a GPF. - NKF
Fox
Ok... I got the game to work at least semi-smooth on XP with the hardware accel toned down, and running in compatibility mode... but the game still runs TERRIBLY FAST. I can't even scroll around in the battlescape, I can't shoot down UFOs because the interception goes so fast they just escape. WTF?
Jman4117
Get a slow down program.I use Turbo, but if you have a really fast PC you may need one that can go below 1%, but in my case it's 70%.
Jh316
Like I said, I copied a savegame from another computer and ran it on this one, and it worked until I got to a battle, where it'd crash as soon as I stepped off the skyranger.
NKF
Ah, yes, that's ye olde crash-as-you-step-out-of-skyranger bug. It shouldn't be related, but it is yet another bug with unknown causes with no set methods of getting around -- as the solutions can vary from system to system. If only they'd release the source code so us programming nuts can fix most of the errors and put in a proper frame rate controller... - NKF
