Ki-tat Chung
There are quite a lot of things from Doom 3 that are intreging. For instance, has anyone noticed that the plasma gun from Doom is strikingly similar to the heavy plasma from UFO?Also, in one of the emails, they mention "TorsoBoy" and some Albekirq (sic) machine. I'll check that one up. Edit:https://members.optusnet.com.au/kitatchung/plasma.JPG
Matri
Well, there was that variation of the Nigerian scam mail, heh. And the UAC's (sp?) interface seems very similar to Star Trek's LCARS.
Bomb Bloke
So I said, "You want me to help you with that?" And Marty, he just rolls his eyes and says, "No, I want you to cut of my arms and legs with a chainsaw" So I did. And then he gets all indignant on me, saying, "Hey man, I was just being sarcastic" Well that's just great, how was I supposed to know that?I'm not a mind reader, for crying out loud. And now he's got a really cute nickname -Torso Boy!So what's he complaining about?! From his 11min song, "Albuquerque". The only bit of news I've heard about Doom 3 is it's effect on video card sales. It was soon discovered that two certain older cards, very cheap, could be used in dual SLI mode and rival the speed of whatever the current card availble was. These older cards were therefore taken off the market, and only reintroduced when they were properly outdated. I had found an article about it somewhere, but it seems to have gone due to a flood of other news. I don't really pay much attention to modern hard/software. I could babel on about all the System Shock parallels. I admit I haven't actually played any more then the XBox demo of Doom 3, but I gather the famous '451' code makes its appearance somewhere. Strong Bob
Doom 3 is just System Shock 2 that compensated it's gameplay for graphics. Interesting things I spotted? - The BFG 9000 retains it's name as an official weapon. (Even though BFG stands for "Big Fucking Gun". Any military hardware named like that nowadays?) - Enemies can still kill each other, but won't turn on each other if they get caught in crossfires. (One of the better parts of the original Doom games.) - The Lost Souls seem to use some sort of cybernetic attachement for propulsion... Yet we see the birth of one come from some lady in an office. Leads one to speculate that maybe some people had some kind of mechanical implant like that already... But who would ever get thrusters implanted into the back of their skull? I have a humorous idea of an ejection system for when the body is too beaten and the head must escape... - Pinky... Uh... I only remember encountering about 3 of 'em throughout the entire game. You guys ever wonder why it's called Pinky when it isn't pink? It's based on the Pink Demon from the original Doom... Despite having very little resemblance. - The physics of Hell... I wonder why your stamina is infinite there. Maybe it was originally supposed to mean you were literally dead and therefore such trivial things such as food, stamina, and sleep were no longer consequential? Because as far as I can tell... Hell is little more than another dimension in this case. - Hell seems to rely a bit on cybernetics... Pinky, the Mancubus, the Revenant, Lost Souls, Cyberdemon, and even Sarge. Makes me wonder if Mars also had a cybernetics facility... And also wonder why Hell's minions would even need such things. - The Cherubs friggin' creeped me out. Did anyone else think "Gerber" the moment they saw them? I thought it was interesting at least... That's all the interesting things I can think of... Maybe I should look at the game some more. I don't think there are any weapons with an official name of BFG but I remember hearing about a weapon that was nicknamed "The BFG" by the soldiers that used it. I think it was a gatling gun or something mounted on a vehicle.... but can't really remember. - Hell seems to rely a bit on cybernetics... I thought that too.. maybe linked to the Strogg in Quake/Quake 4? Either that or someone at ID software has a thing with big machines.
Matri
I think it was a gatling gun or something mounted on a vehicle.... but can't really remember.I'm pretty much out of it, but the only vehicle-mounted gatling I know of is the Avenger. y'know, I'm wondering why no one's retrofitted it to use HE shells and mount it on a building. I reckoned it would wipe out an entire armoured column in seconds. That's what the Avenger was designed for, after all.
Kernel
Acording to Wikipedia the term Gatling gun covers many types of rotating barrel guns. For example on their "minigun" page it says: "More technically it is a externally powered Gatling gun of rifle caliber, The Avenger is definatly an awsom weapon tho' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GAU-8_Avenger

I reckoned it would wipe out an entire armoured column in seconds. That's what the Avenger was designed for, after all. Simply put, you can't stand still. Anything you mount on a building is in a fixed known location and vulnerable to long-range artillery fire. Even artillery nowadays has to be able to "shoot and scoot" to avoid return artillery fire. Also, wouldn't HE shells be less effective against armoured columns than AP?
Bomb Bloke
I suspose it's easier to catch a stationary gun, too.
Kernel
Mounting it on a vehicle would be better... it would have to be a big vehicle due to it's size, it takes up 50% of the space in the A10. Hmm... wonder what would happen if you could mount it on a large chopper. Although with recoil force equal to one of the A10s engines when it fires it might not be pretty... for the target or the chopper.
FullAuto
30mm for a heli mounted gun could be a bit much. There are .50 and 7.62mm miniguns, I'm sure they suffice.

NO no no no..... bigger is better when it comes to guns I always say. Anyone remember Warzone 2100 where you could mount an MLRV with onto a small chopper? That was nuts.A small fast chopper fireing 8 guided missiles towards it's target and reloading every 5 seconds.
Matri
JFG, with that muzzel velocity they could shoot pebbles and still punch holes in the armour. And I was thinking more of using it as a base defense turret, or maybe to supplement naval bunkers. Heck, I think a battleship would be the only other vehicle that could carry one without destroying the vehicle everytime it shoots According to the wiki, 30kN is a LOT of recoil power. Never played WarZone 2100, can't find a cheap copy anywhere. But I wouldn't be adverse to loading a huge gun on a tiny chassis Edited November 25, 2005 by Matri
NKF
Warzone... Warzone - that's the one with fully custom "tanks" that were reminiscent of Alpha Centauri's modifiable vehicle system, right? Choose chassis, mode of propulsion, turret and I think one or two other components, then keep blueprints of them for future production. Fun game - alas the final quarter of the game was a bit awful, particularly with the hover tanks with the mind control units and that ridiculous ion cannon misson... Regardless, I'd love to get my hands on a copy for nostalgia's sake. I'm a sucker for the rotary and ground shaker mortars. - NKF
Bomb Bloke
I played Battlezone II, which seems quite similar. You can only modify weapon loadouts, however.
Kernel
Battlezone 2 isn't anything like Warzone 2100. Warzone 2100 was probably the first fully 3D top down RTS. Before then most RTS games were based on sprites. After warzone 90% of RTS games went 3D. Battlezone 2 was a first person RTS and it was released quite a while after Warzone 2100. Space Voyager
I found two things very amazing in Doom3; 1) Every time you hear the infernal teleport in action, all you need to do is turn for 180 degrees and shoot. You'll definitely hit the baddy. 2) The most amazing thing in the Mars base built by humans, who probably wanted the base to be as functional as possible, is the ammount of hidden compartments the builders included for the creatures to hide in. Impressive, really. They are all over the base, in almost every hallway. I guess the builders either had a lot to hide from one another OR they already planned for a stupid shooter game to be made in that base.

Oh... and no-one ever has to eat... or sleep... or use the toilet... I thought were supposed to working towards realism here?

Ehh, I'm actually more bugged by some games where it takes you hours to build a force of thousands. And then in cutscenes it takes the same factory months to produce a force of hundreds.
