The 'net and the people on it.

Some things just take a short cut right to the primal anger at the base of my brain and push that button. Circumventing normal controls and checkpoints like few others do (Someone telling me to calm down when I'm angry, someone asking if I'm ok when I've just hit my thumb with a hammer), very often I find myself whipped into a frenzy, not because these things are so bad, but simply because they are so commonplace.

I'm not talking about anyone on these boards, anyway.

People who use...ellipsis....in place of any...other punctuation. Now don't get me wrong, I don't much mind spelling and grammar mistakes, they're fine. I'm not averse to the language evolving, but, isn't using ellipses constantly MORE effort than the odd full stop and comma? The creators of the monstrosity known as the run-on sentence are at least minimising on punctuation.

People who pretend they've read a thread and then ask a question which was answered ten posts prior. People who freely admit they haven't read the thread aren't as bad, but if they care so much to air their views, why not read the thread? Or, conversely, if they don't care enough to read it, why post?

People who use IMO or IMHO every other sentence. I think it should be obvious to everyone that what that person writes is their own opinion. However, some are forced into this when they post on board that pounces on them for not clearly stating so. It's amazing how few people will tolerate another's opinion of a subject. Saying "Well, that's just your opinion." is not the height of intellignce. Neither is insisting your opinion is 'right'. Opinions are not inherently right or wrong. Arguing using more than three brain cells and Wikipedia is preferred.

People who come on the internet with the sole intent of badmouthing something. If anyone has ever looked at the boards over on IMDb (et al), you'll see a lot of this. Everything has it's detractors, but to state baldly something is a bag of spanners without reason is just retarded. Such idiocy gets in the way of honest discussion about the good and bad points of the thing in question, and is appreciated by no one. How much free time do these people have, anyway?

Ignore me, I'm ranting. :)

Nice rant :)

I'm very guilty of the "I've not had a chance to read up on this thread, so you may have already covered this, but could I just ask/suggest" type posts.

I find myself very often in a hurry with no time to read the whole topic, but then after posting will frequently find myself reading any other topics of interest and making time for them

If you two young uns don't pipe down, I'm going to start telling you my old war stories.

"So then our general came up with a really cunning idea to defeat the Romans. He ordered us to paint ourselves blue, knowing that it would unnerve the enemy."

Ignore me, I'm ranting.

Couldn't you have put that at the beginning of your rant? We could have saved ourselves a couple of minutes.

See they tell you to calm down, you'll live longer!

I mean, what if we did calm down, and there as a coup d'etat? And instead of resisting, we all just calmed down and let a totalitarian military government take over, and then eventually woke up to the fact that we were oppressed! Then we'd have to start a resisitance movement, and inevitably, we'd be caught because there would be mistakes made by fools who haven't been weeded out yet, and then you'd be found guilty in show trials.

When you're stood there with the cold hard barrel of a gun pressed to the base of your skull and a bullet just inches away ready to speed into the jelly of your brain and blow your eyes out of your face, you'll realise it's too late and you shouldn't have calmed down! Because you won't live longer! You'll die at the hands of some evil commie pinko!

Forget it buddy, it's CHINATOWN!

"I'd like to thank the Academy, my parents, the love of my life and the inventor of the rubber duck. Not necessarily in that order."

*starts weeping theatrically*

I really hate forums where people are REALLY rude to people who post up badly spelt or punctuated posts. and I don't mean the odd little 'hey buddy, slow down with the typing you may hit the right key' comment, I mean when it's pretty clear that english is not that persons first language, an their obviously trying hard but not quie there.

The Adobe Photoshop Forums are terrible for this (check that link). They'll be really snide about people who don't punctuate to a faultless standard, and rip into non-english speakers who try to post and have difficulty making themselves clear.

On the other hand, it really annoys me when people post REALLY badly miss-typed posts, consistently, when it's pretty obvious that they are an intelligent person with a good grasp of english. I don't mean people who have problems spelling correctly, or if they put 'their', when it should be 'they're' (I always have problems with the word 'character', i never remember where the 'h' is meant to go) I'm talking about posts that are choc-full of mis-hit keys, and basic errors in sentence structure, yet no effort is made to go back and edit some of the more 'iklebuibhe' words. . . GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I know these two seem line an oxymoron, but IMHO (calm down FA :) ) the internet is by it's nature an informal place to 'chat' in a textual casual manner. At the same time, you do have a duty to ensure that your words are understood to the best of your ability. Just try. . .thats all I ask!

(as FA above, can't think of anyone on this site who's paticualrly to blame for either of the above)

As for the chaps that say they can't speak English very well - hats off to you! You type VERY GOOD English on the whole and are far better in our language than we could ever hope to be in yours.

We are lazy. You have taken the time to learn. We bow before your infinite wisdom and hope that we can one day learn half as much as you have. Here, have a cake as an expression of good will :)

True enough. When someone has learned enough English to make themselves understood, they have my respect. My language skills are shat. English is quite difficult to learn, especially when you've already got your primary language in your head and you have to struggle with that too.

Many non-english speakers don't get ripped into if they announce themselves as such. But they are often confused with n00b speakers if they don't.

I rather like this little picture which explains how to turn off caps lock.

From the best site in the world or something like that.

My pet hate is signatures. If a signature is bigger then the user's average post size, it should go.

Images in posts aren't so much of a problem so long as they aren't bigger then 50kb. Images bigger then that, or larger then the average users screen size, should be linked too. Thread which are meant to contain images should be clearly marked as such.

I agree with you with the obvious part, but I like to use IMHO when I am saying something that is subjective (i.e. can't be explain/proven just by logic/words).

One thing that really annoys me is when people write sentences with half the words being replaced by abbreviations (as in text messaging). I know it is more easier and quicker to write that way but it also reveals laziness and in some cases an attempt to hide bad spelling. If the writer is not using his native language then it's perfectly understandable, but you should be able to write in your native language without spelling errors. Ditto for lack of pontuation.

Man, you should check out some of the forums that have little kids. BB invited me to Gaia once, and its pretty much a general forum with lots of mini games. I decieded to check out the anime topic, and I came accross a thread which discussed the a hypothetical battle between a Gundam (from any universe) and a Eva. It looked interesting, but it was already 40 pages long! Being the newb hater I was, I wanted to prove a point, and read every page of it! by the time I finished, it had come to around 60 or so pages, but I was proud of my achievement. I announced my views, told them I had read every post, and the smart people acknowledged my views. The general consensus between the intellectuals were that in most cases (and universes), a Gundam would win, and in others, an Eva would win. But, oh Lord, the newb keps coming from all four corners of the globe.

"I dUn CaRe! EvA r0xorx~"

"SCREW J00, G|_||\||>@|\/| **** EVAS"

etc, etc.

Conclusion: In discussional threads, most of the information is hammered out by page 10, and occasional new piece of into every once in a while. After that (and even earlier), its just form members repeated known information to newbs who never come back ever again, or lots of flaming.

All in all, I think I can safely say that, this place in definately my home on the internet.

I notice a forum that you might like. The NationStates Forums are pretty much the most mature forums I've ever seen in.. well, a heck of a long time. Granted, there are the usual immature kiddies there, but for the most part everyone behaves themselves and have pretty civil discussions.

Of course, you guys are more fun
