I laughed at the comments - this one sums up my own thoughts on the matter:

Almost everyone who commented on this article works at Eidos.

That comment gets 10/10 smilies! :P:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

It's fantastic. They did this with Tomb Raider: Underworld as well, IIRC, only they wanted 80% or over then. And I'm sure we all remember the lovely little Kane & Lynch furore over at Gamespot.

Eidos reckon:

I have Eidos' official statement on this for your info, it comes from Jon Brooke, the UK marketing manager:

“With regards an article posted on RamRaider alleging that Eidos has fixed review scores for Batman: Arkham Asylum, we want to state that no discussions have been held about review scores with any magazines. In short there is simply not one shred of truth in this article, except for the title of the game.”

Totally avoiding the issue. RR did not allege that Eidos fixed review scores, nor that 'discussions' took place. Well dodged, lads.

BTW, GamesMaster magazine gave the game 96%. :P

That means everyone should boycott both Eidos and GamesMaster magazine. If you don't like their practices, then don't purchase anything from them. Simple really. But as we know, that'll never happen. :P

Everyone seems to think boycotts are useless, which is why they won't do them. I suppose that's largely correct in this instance, as no matter how it reviews, it has the Batman name behind it, so it'll sell millions. The amount of gamers who are aware and informed is probably higher than in other consumer groups, I like to think, as they use the internet more, but for every one who is using their brain, there are dozens of the clueless.

By all accounts it is shaping up to be a good game as well, but no matter the reviews now, this has placed a seed of doubt in my mind. Has it got good scores because it's good, or because Eidos prodded the reviewer?

Okay, it's not the all-consuming wave that was Driv3r, but it's not a good thing to do. If you don't think your game is any good, work a bit harder.

It's insane is what it is. Now you need a perpetual fixed internet connection to be able to even play singleplayer.

I'm kinda in awe at EA for actually topping Games For Windows Live. That one at least allows you to create an offline account so you can still play off the net.

What's your opinion on the DRM, Az?

It's useless, it does not and will never prevent people from pirating games :P and in some cases like StarForce, it actually hurts consumers.

I've been playing Dead Space today (teasting new graphics card :)), quite good! the horror atmosphere is wonderfully achieved, gameplay is very similar in form to Resident Evil 4, nice :)

Oh, I read that Resident Evil 5 is coming on the PC next year :) that should be good, too bad RE lost its horror theme and switched to an action one, but oh well...

Heh, what is even worse is that it only hurts legal owners... Idiotic. If you pirated SF games you had no problems, otherwise you never knew. CALLING for piracy is what StarForce was.

I dunno. For reasons known only to them, you need an Always On connection, and you'll have to remain logged into their service to even play single-player. I don't know about you but I don't think No-DVDs will help with that.

In such cases, the crack would not only be a no-disc crack, but a no connection required crack. Is has been seen, has been done and has been crack, and in the end it's the legit users who are stuck with the annoyance of such DRM. Add to this that "class" system they're adding and I'm already frowning upon it.

Boy you have no idea what cracks can do ;)
