I played it just now. It's really great and I hope to see it finished soon.

However, I would suggest everyone sets their firewalls or does a spyware or adware scan after play. Even after I shut down my messenger, browser, and any possible internet connect, my firewall detected an attempt to access my internet while I ran the game. This happens every time I try to run the game. And it shouldn't unless I'm trying to access the internet myself.

Granted, this could just be the game sending performance information, but I don't recall reading anywhere that it does this. So just FYI, in case they snuck in some adware for funding reasons, be a little careful playing it.

Just downloading it myself.

I wouldn't worry too much about the firewall thing, it's probably the multiplayer parts of the game setting themselves up. Lot's of full retail games popup warnings on my firewall even in single player mode.

Edit:

Just installed it and ran it.

The reason it causes a firewall popup is because it's a multiplayer only game at present. ;)

Bit difficult to play the game with other people without accessing the internet... unless you plan on playing alone... but then that's a bit boring.

I didn't notice any multiplayer function, actually. Just some preprogrammed demos. (I only saw a demo of two fleets of ships blowing each other out of the sky.)

Maybe I missed it, I dunno. But it got me suspicious when my firewall jumped up like that. Better safe than sorry, I guess.

I rarely ever play online. So I'll just wait for the single player version to finish.
