Slaughter
Tom's Hardware was present at The Gathering here in Norway this year. It is the worlds largest/second largest LAN party. If you're interested, take a look at their article.
FullAuto
Swish. LAN parties kick arse. I can't stand online gaming, it's chock full of idiots, but if you're playing on a LAN you can always get up and punch the git camping you.
Slaughter
Yep, that is great indeed! A shame it is in the easter though...
Pete
Blimey! That's HUGE! Still, pings should be good for FPS games
Slaughter
Yeah, at least for the old games they ran there. You can find the TG site here, and the site of DreamHack here. It's the largest one, running two times a year in Sweden.
FullAuto
That's damn good. 12 player LAN is usually all I can scrape together, but that's always damn good fun.
Slaughter
12 players are good fun! Don't really need more in most cases.
FullAuto
Not that I've seen. Nor is it as difficult as you'd think to sort out. Admittedly my experience has been almost solely with Xboxes but still, not hard at all. And so much more fun because you can pour beer over the winner. Bomb Bloke
I've been to two LANs, total. The first one lost it's zing once I found that even though I'd never played HalfLife before, I was the third best player (the other two outclassed me by a mile, and the rest of the mob got crushed by the top three), and that I couldn't get UFO running when I got bored... The second was a bring your own comp deal. The only comp I had on hand wasn't the most powerful rig. I only played DOW that night, but even though I had a 1fps rate during any battle at minimum detail, I won every game. I'd never played DOW before then, either... Of course, online, I simply get crushed by ping. Living in TAS has many drawbacks.
Slaughter
Can imagine I was quite amused when I read about the Norwegian Modernisation minister in the article at Tom's Hardware. Says that he seemed like a down to earth guy, walking amongst people in a crew T-Shirt with no body guards... I don't think any Norwegian politician use body guards, unless something special has happened . Guess there are some differences between Norway and the US
FullAuto
It's not often you hear about some Norwegian going on a killing spree, I'll give you that. Perhaps your nutters are just a bit more placid than the Yanks?
Slaughter
Well, it is changing in Norway as well sadly, but we're far from the US yet fortunately.
DoomMunky
You have yet to challenge our unquestioned dominance in the areas of school killings, McDonald's massacres, and general, all-pervasive fear. You're either with us or against us... Seen Bowling for Columbine? Great examination of a fear-soaked America. My LAN experience consists of going to the local LAN gaming shop in my hometown, setting up my computer, installing CounterStrike, getting completely ripped to shreds for an hour or so, getting some folks to agree to play Battlefield 1942, having my ass completely handed to me for a half-hour, trading war-stories, laughing, eating pizza, wishing I were better at CS and BF1942, realizing what I would have to sacrifice to BE as good as those other guys (a life, my health, my g/f, my incredible coolness), and going home a little frustrated but happy for the companionship. FullAuto
Yep, seen BFC, it's a good 'un. Haven't seen 'Elephant' yet though.I do ok at LAN's, no more. Spend too much time doing other stuff to play games as much as I used to.
DoomMunky
Other stuff, eh? You have discovered cross-stitching, then? That was the end of my truly dedicated gaming days...
FullAuto
Cross-stitching? Pah! It's knitting now, pal, and THAT is hard core.
