Slaughter
Okay, this isn't really off topic, but as it concerns all the games and I don't want it in the news I'll post it here. We are looking for vital links for all the games we cover. If you know good ones for either of the X-Com games, Silent Storm Games or UFO games, post them here. Everything from fan-sites and fan-fiction to official sites. Thanks in advance!
Zeno
Do you also want non-specific game-related technical support sites for making older games work, such as VDMSound and MoSlow? --Zeno
Slaughter
Yes, post "everything". We can filter them,
Zeno
I'm guessing, by the lack of response, that every website people use is already listed on the StrategyCore X-Com Links page, or websites with links from those pages. However, since I just came back after a week of Internetlessness, I'll volunteer to be the necromancer who bumps this once and sees if anyone has any additions. Someone should at least add the Wiki site (pinned here in the forums), unless you're waiting until it contains more entries. --Zeno
Pete
There are many, many, MANY more than those listed for X-COM. I'll have a root around when I get home if I get the chance.
Slaughter
I only added a few there. Didn't have time for more. But there surely are many other good ones, like Danial's site.
Zombie
I got these off the Xenocide (www.xcomufo.com) forums: Games in progress:Project XenocideUFO2000 website Fan-Based Websites:Arky's X-COM PageDanial's UFOpaedia WebsiteHatfarm's Xcom Game Data WebsiteHobbes Xcom websiteDaniel Blakemore's Scifi EmporiumI didn't link to the online X-COM field manual simply because there isn't anything there yet... These I pulled off the net and from StrategyCore members: Gomisan's Xcom WebsiteS2 HQ - Australian Silent Storm Headquarters I probably forgot a whole slug of websites pertaining to X-COM and the other various games. So sorry in advance if I missed anyone! Just as a side note, I was searching the net via Google the other day looking for "X-COM" websites. All of a sudden, there are a ton of websites with the ending "x.com" and probably 99% of them have nothing to do with X-COM. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack! Zombie
No problem, Slaughter. Glad to help! Hmmm... It seems as though I only touched the tip of the iceberg in terms of X-COM sites. Some obvious ones I missed before: NKF's WebsiteBomb Bloke's WebsiteBB's page loads spotty at best for me, others may have more luck. (Just being honest!) I yanked these off of Jman4117's website:X-COM.Net Turn based gameMunkylord's X-com mod page And how can we forget about Scott T. Jones's website?XCOMUTIL by Scott T. Jones's WebsiteAnd a link from Scott's website:Devisraad XCOM Page I pulled this from the X-Command website (one of the few links that still work):X-Com @ Llamalicious.com Here is DaiShivas map view website:DaiShiva's Website Please note that the sites I list have been personally checked by myself to make sure they actually load and work. (No sense in posting bogus links, right)? Seriously, putting together a page of links like this takes a looong time! Now come on people! I know there are some of you out there who have a hot X-COM link, or know of one I didn't list. Our friend Slaughter needs help!
Slaughter
Thanks mate! If I find the time I'll add them today.
Slaughter
Okay, I finally got around to adding the links. There were a few I didn't add. Bomb Bloke's, because it isn't loading properly, and Hatfarm's because none of the links on it work. Again, thanks you Zombie! And we welcome more links! Zombie
I'm still working on it Slaughter. I don't give up that easily! Question: Do you want editor links too? What am I saying? Of course you do! I downloaded a whole bunch of them the other day for TFTD because I started playing that game again. I'll check to see what we have listed. If I have a couple that aren't mentioned, you can expect to see those soon. Again, great job on the links section! Prima Classe #1! ---------- Edit: I found another link to Hatfarm's editors. And the download links on this page work. His editor is excellent and it would be a shame if it wasn't included here. I have tried pretty much every editor out there, and Hatfarm's is the only one that is windows-based. "Unique", and "easy to use" pop into my mind here. Slaughter
In general I think we'll rather add the individual editors to the files section with a link to the site there. Not sure though, what do you think? And are there more sites that should be made essential? I'd add XCommand, but there are too many broken links that Remi have to fix first... Zombie
Oh, absolutely! Editors should definately go into the files section as that is what it is for. Right now, the "Essential Sites" is pretty good. If anything, the X-Com @ llamalicious.com site would be a better choice to bump to essential than XCommand simply because all the links still work there. For now, I think your choices are excellent. I looked for more fan-based TFTD sites today, but no luck. It's just not a very popular game. I did find a drink called "Terror From The Deep" though. Mix equal parts of a red-hot cinnamon schnapps and Dr. Pepper and serve in an Old Fashioned glass. Sorry, I couldn't help myself!
Slaughter
Okay, I'll add the editors. I sent a mail to Hatfarm asking him to add a small install guide and correct the links on his site first though. Though many people will probably figure out that all you have to do is to put the editor files in the UFO folder, I don't want to answer that question again and again... Zombie
Just to give you a heads-up: Hatfarm is currently MIA. He hasn't been active in the xcomufo forums since Feb 17th 2005. I sent him a PM on the 16th of Feb, but haven't received a reply yet. He's probably busy with something. Incidentally, the links to his website and editor page work fine for me. I navigate to: https://hatfarm.xcomufo.com/ first. Then, I click the link to: https://www.stonepool.com/xcom/. That is the actual editor link page. As most people probably head straight for the editor page, a direct link to the stonepool address should suffice. That way, we bypass the supposed broken links which are going out of the hatfarm.xcomufo page.
Slaughter
I sent a mail to him and got a reply. He'll look into a bug I found (along with many other people) and get back to me. Regarding the broken links, I mean for all the dat files at https://hatfarm.xcomufo.com/ They don't work for me. He'll look into it. Anyway, thanks for the heads up
Zombie
I took a break from searching X-COM related links as I haven't made any progress there. While looking at the links site I noticed that Silent Storm/Silent Storm: Sentinals didn't have a link section. Whoa! I can't let that happen! Official:I'm not sure, but this seems to be the "Main" page for Silent Storm:Main Silent Storm page (english)There is also a German equivalent at: https://www.silentstorm-online.com/main.php?lang=de. It's exactly the same page as above, except translated into German. JoWooD Productions This is the JoWooD page for Silent Storm. Nival Interactive-Silent StormNival Interactive-Silent Storm: Sentinels Fan sites:(I mentioned this one already)Australian Silent Storm Headquarters This I pulled off the silentstorm-online fanpages and links section (it is in russian, so I didn't know if you wanted it):silest.ru "The biggest russian site about Silent Storm tactical game from Nival Interactive. News, articles, the biggest gallery available, files, forum, press-releases etc..." I think we know about this site already. It's in German, but is very good.Silent Storm @ Taktikzone. It also has info about Silent Storm: Sentinals, the Jagged Alliance series, UFO Aftermath, Laser Squad Nemesis and of all things: X-COM Terror from the deep! If your German is OK, I recommend this site. If you want some wallpapers for your computer, this site has them for Silent Storm: Sentinals-S3 Wallpaper That's about all I could come up with. There might be a couple of fan sites missing from my list. See, some of my searches turned up results for Silent Storm, but they were russian sites. Since I cant read the russian language, I can't determine if they are indeed fan sites. PS - I don't ever include sites that review a game or just have cheat codes. Everyone can search for those themselves. If you want, I might be able to compile a cheat code index for X-COM and Silent Storm, but someone would need to help us verify that they work. - Zombie
Slaughter
I haven't added any pages for S2/S3 yet on purpose. We're looking to finish the other stuff first, and just leave the old site in place for the time being. But this list will be good to have when we do. Thanks! Oh, and I'll add https://www.ufopaedia.org to the links section for X-Com now. Forgot it.
Zombie
Yep, I was just going to mention the wiki. Thanks for adding that! I forgot another X-COM site. Well, it's not all about X-COM. It's a fanfiction site. Hobbes is pretty busy over there, and I recommend reading XCOM: The Unknown Menace. Excellent! Here is the X-COM part of the website: UFO fan fiction @ FanFiction.Net - Zombie
Slaughter
Okay, it's been added. I'd like some thoughts on how to sort the links though. Alphabetically, by how important we regard them or something else? Should the FanFiction.net one be regarded as essential?
Zombie
I tried various methods of sorting the links while still maintaining some sort of relevance in mind - let's just say it didn't work very well. Alphabetically is ok, but the problem with that method is the links are disordered, not grouped. And another thing which might bother the owners of the sites is what order they are placed on a list. How can we be fair, and still be able to sort the links efficiently? That's the big question. This is what I propose: First we group the links according to how the StrategyCore forum is laid out. For instance, under the X-COM part of the forum, the sections are laid out like this:X-COM NewsX-COM SupportThe X-COM GamesX-COM ProjectsX-COM SimmingX-COM Fan FictionX-COM Fan Ideas for New GamesX-COM Modding Now just ignore the News, Projects, Simming and Fan Ideas for New Games. Why? Well, the news area is constantly changing and any links in this section would become obsolete. Projects because you have the list at the top of the links section. Simming and Fan Ideas, because there are no links for those areas. What we are left with is this:X-COM Support (downloads)The X-COM GamesX-COM Fan Fiction (fan fiction sites)X-COM Modding (modding sites) Under "The X-COM Games", there are subsections in there. Arrange the rest of the X-COM sites starting with Enemy Unknown, TFTD, Inter, Apoc, Enforc, and Email X-COM. If a site covers more than one game, it goes at the top of the list and arranged by size and importance. More specific sites which only deal with one game get placed in the appropriate category. That seems to be the only way to sort things effectively. It's up to you if you want to make subheadings under the Fan Sites area. Here's what I came up with: X-COM Support (downloads)Arky's X-COM PageDevisraad X-COM PageGomisan's X-Com Website The X-COM GamesGlobal Sites (these are not specific to one game but cover multiple areas)XCommandX-Com @ llamalicious.com NKF's WebsiteApocalypseX-Com Apocalypse source X-COM Fan FictionX-Com @ FanFiction.NetScifi Emporium X-COM ModdingX-COM: Area 51DaiShiva's WebsiteMunkylord's X-com mod page As you might imagine, I had to make some tough decisions on where to place each site, but I think it makes those links easier to find. If I locate some sites which only deal with one game, you can add those in the appropriate area when we cross that bridge. I'd leave the "Games in progress" and "Essential sites" where they are. As the "Essential sites" are kind of hard to categorize anyway, they are in a good spot. That's what I think. - Zombie
