Sober Council
Okay....This had been mentioned before, but no-one seemed to have any idea on what to do about it. Sequence of events: Install = FineSetup = No ProblemRun Game = GreatBuy/Equip vehicles etc. = No worriesReseach = EasyCity Combat = Piece-o-cakeTactical Combat = Nope! I can load up my transport, & send it off & wait for it to dock at wherever. But as soon as i select investigate/raid the trouble starts...I get as far as that nice poster that kindly reminds you Don't Get Hurt!, which fades into the squad equip screen. Then the system hangs mid-fade every single time no matter the mission, save/new game, etc..... And, whats more frustrating is that i *know* full well it should work as i have had it running fine before on my Win98 machine. Any help (or even kind words ) would be most appreciated.... Nice forum btw
Ki-tat Chung
yeah, there are quite alot of other people here with the same problem, myself included. sorry, we don't actually have a good solution right now. edit: wiat, check this out. i havn't checked it out myself (cuz i can use my other computer!), but i heard its pretty good with UFO and TFTD. im sure some other members can vouch for this program. Bomb Bloke
It lets you run dos software, but last I saw, it was slow. As in, Apoc would crawl without a beast of a machine... Question 1, what operating system are you using, Sober Council? Any idea on the machine specs?
Sober Council
DOSBox also fails on the same tactical loading..... My OS is Win98 first edition (Would be SE, but i can't for the life of me find my CD....) Machine:Pentium3 500192Mb RAM64Mb KYRO II C-Media C3880 (Full SB16 emu.) What really bugs me tho, is that UFO & TFTD are no problem at all. Just for the record, my last machine (which sadly proceeded to silicon heaven after a breif surge) ran Apoc fine. NKF
Windows 98 eh? I've got a Win98 machine, 700 celeron blah blah blah. Apocalypse works fine on it. Have you tried exiting to dos mode? - NKF

Bomb Bloke
Heh, I was expecting you to say XP... But this sounds like a memory issue to me, or perhaps a sound issue. One or the other. First, run the game setup program and turn off all sound options, and see if it runs. If it does, try other sound configs in an attempt to get it going with sound in enabled. If it turns out sound isn't the issue, then show us the contents of your autoexec.bat and your config.sys files. You can open the things up with notepad, if you're not sure what I mean. You can set up your memory in many different ways, and in some cases, this can cause odd results.
Sober Council
Well.... BB has prodded us in the right direction at least. It *IS* a sound issue, as i had no problem at all playing in total morbid silence. I tried a few other sound configs - or at least attempted to...As if i select anything other than autodetect the system locks. Weird. Just completeness sake: Autoexec @echo off C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE~1\BOOTUP.EXE PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\MPS\XCOMEDIT\;%PATH% mode con codepage prepare=((850) C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ega.cpi) mode con codepage select=850 keyb uk,,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\keyboard.sys Config device=c:\windows\himem.sys files=40 device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1) Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys Nothing much going on in there to muck up..... And... I wouldn't touch XP even with someone else's stick... hehe
Bomb Bloke
Ok, load up windows, and then goto Start => Settings => Control Panel => System. From there, select the Device Manager tab, and you'll see a list of all your devices. Bring up the properties for your sound card, and check the Resources tab. Note down which IRQ and DMA the thing is using, and manually set Apoc to those settings. In some cases there will be multiple DMA numbers, try 'em all. The port is just about always 220. I presume you're telling the game to use the SB16 card. If you continue to have no luck with that, try the SB Pro, and if that fails, just go for the SB 100% compatible. Then continue to try anything that looks remotely like a Sound Blaster, odds are one of them will work.
Aralez
Wll, you know you can speed up the DosBox proggy ENORMOUSLY with Alt+F12 to give it more of the CPU cycles? The standard setting is iirc 3000 but you can go WAY up. I used ~20000 for Xcom once and actually had to slow Dosbox down again.
