Crazy Photon
Hi guys/gals, I'm moving to Chicago next week!!! Do you have any idea about how much $ is required for having a normal life? special things I should take into account? Hugs for the Queen!!! Pete
Is that dollars over the average lifetime? Things to take into account:* Never run out of toilet roll* Check both ways before crossing the road* People may say one thing and mean another* Beware strange tasting coffee from McDonalds - this may be due to "extra" ingredients* The sky is not blue because of light reflecting the blueness of the ocean... it's more technical than that and involves the composition of the upper atmosphere Err... more relevant ones... * Start collecting boxes to pack your stuff in ASAP. There never seem to be any around when you actually get round to packing.* Get plenty of sleep the night before and don;t rush things. It's going to be as loooong day when you move * Wrap up warm. It ain't called the windy city for nothing Others may have more useful advice. I'm in one of my funny moods
Slaughter
If someone "Makes you an offer you can't refuse", they usually mean business . Have fun in the US!
Crazy Photon
Is that dollars over the average lifetime? Hehe, actually, sort of, as I wasn't told yet about how much I would earn, and I don't want to go there to starve...Things to take into account:* Never run out of toilet roll* Check both ways before crossing the road* People may say one thing and mean another* Beware strange tasting coffee from McDonalds - this may be due to "extra" ingredients* The sky is not blue because of light reflecting the blueness of the ocean... it's more technical than that and involves the composition of the upper atmosphere Hehehe, here is not much different * Start collecting boxes to pack your stuff in ASAP. There never seem to be any around when you actually get round to packing.Indeed! I am going to start packing this weekend, altough I will try to carry not too much, due to weight limits at the airport and I don't need *all* my stuff * Get plenty of sleep the night before and don;t rush things. It's going to be as loooong day when you move That will be hard, as I will have several parties before living... I should have no problems though, as it would not be the first time I have loong days * Wrap up warm. It ain't called the windy city for nothing Yes, I've been told about that, I'll bring my winter clothing but I will also buy more clothes when I arrive as well... Others may have more useful advice. I'm in one of my funny moods Thank you Pete If someone "Makes you an offer you can't refuse", they usually mean business . Have fun in the US!Yes, it seems to be a good offer (job related), altough actual budget is yet to be known... Munkeylord
get a job asap, and never trust another. there are so many scam artists out there that are just after your money
Kernel
If you like tea or coffee take some with you... tea especialy in the US tastes like it's been pulled out of the local sewer. That goes for some food stuff as well.... like chocolate.
Pete
Indeed, Mars bars usually taste different between mainland Europe, the UK and elsewhere. Very odd and not a pleasant surprise
Crazy Photon
get a job asapI will go because of job related stuff If you like tea or coffee take some with you... tea especialy in the US tastes like it's been pulled out of the local sewer. That goes for some food stuff as well.... like chocolate. You should see local stuff, it's horrible! luckily I don't like coffee / tea, a coke / pepsi or an energizer drink (Speed, Red Bull anyone) is ideal to wake up
Accounting Troll
Be prepared for a difficult time getting through airport customs these days. I know one 70 year old woman who regularly visits the US because both her daughters married Americans and settled down over there, and even she has found that the staff have started to act as if they are doing her a personal favour by letting her spend her money in their country and not arresting her instead. Make doubly sure that there are no problems with your travel documents before you leave.
Strong Bob
One thing to remember. Americans are assholes. Well... Not all of us. But for the most part, America has more assholes than most any other country on the planet. Just be careful, and try to be the least dependant on others as possible. Nobody will outright break the law that often... But at the end of the day, it's more than likely you'll be going to bed thinking: "Holy monkey! I've never seen so many arses in one day before, in my entire life"
FullAuto
Look at this! An American said 'arse'. "Holy monkey! I've never seen so many arses in one day before, in my entire life" Never seen that before. Bloody Hell.

Americans are assholes. Wow! Well... Not all of us. But for the most part, America has more assholes than most any other country on the planet. Just be careful, and try to be the least dependant on others as possible.I am somewhat paranoid at trusting strangers, specially when it's survival related... so yes, I will try to be as independant as possible... Crazy Photon
Ok, moving complete!! I am now in Libertyville, Illinois! it is like 50 miles south from Chicago, near the technology complex I am starting to work at... Weather is quite cold in here altough quite different from the traditional coldness that there is in Uruguay, as here the climate is dry and there is wet... Anybody who lives near tell me so we can have a beer together Tammy, did you hear my call?
Strong Bob
I hope you're not living in Libertyville. A 50 mile commute will really get to you after a while. My father has been going on a 35 mile commute for a few years, and he's about ready to run into the place with a submachine gun.
Zombie
Heh, Crazy Photon! Welcome to the midwest (and the United States). I hope everything is going well for you. Libertyville, Illinois is actually 50 miles north of Chicago. Since I'm living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin right now, that's like only 50 miles away! Hopefully, we can get together sometime for that beer! PS: I'll buy!

Crazy Photon
I hope you're not living in Libertyville. A 50 mile commute will really get to you after a while.Actually I do, but fortunately work is only 1 mile away (almost right next to the offices), and there is almost everything I need (bah, except a place for dancing! ) Welcome to the midwest (and the United States). I hope everything is going well for you.Luckily things are fairly well over here, just in the 'settlingin' stage... fortunately people are quite friendly over here so things are looking good Libertyville, Illinois is actually 50 miles north of Chicago.Heh, good point, I still get confused to which way is north Since I'm living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin right now, that's like only 50 miles away! Hopefully, we can get together sometime for that beer!Excellent I really hope we can meet some time Soooo, are the women nice there CP?Ehhh... I have yet to see some women from around my age as there at work most people are like 10+ years older than I am (seriously!)
