The Movie Thread

I needed no Google. I knew what he was talking about from the description. My folks watched a proper theatre production of it in the Lake District last year and said it was better than the film version, so since it's been a play longer than its been a film it's recommended if you can see the play then go for it.

Your actors may vary, but apparently there was one guy properly hurling himself down stairs in the play. I imagine that's in the film version too, but more impressive in real life.

The Divide. What happens when a bunch of people get stuck in a bunker during a nuclear war? Nothing good, quite frankly. 10/10 for Michael Biehn, but the film gets lost halfway through, meandering through a lot of violence, sadism and weirdness to a decent ending. Just about watchable, but it's a close thing. At two hours or so, it's a little too long.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Should have been called A Game of Shit. Trying to be serious, but Robert Downey Jr. is too Robert Downey Jr. to be Sherlock, they don't understand the character so it's just a bit of 'detecting' with action. The fast/slow/fast/slow thing makes me laugh, John Woo was doing that (and it was the best example of it) decades ago. Edgar Wright's film-making now basically rips the absolute piss out of it, so it's amazing to see Guy Ritchie and Zack Snyder use it, thinking it's still as cool as when Western directors were ripping it off. In the nineties.

Some good stuff, but overall it's just a waste of time. The individual parts are actually good, it's just the film as a whole is shit.

Avengers Assemble.

Watch it NOW. I don't care if it's the middle of the night, it's rather good.

The prize for funniest character goes to... HULK!

Hopefully the blank cheque goes to Joss Whedon and we can get more Firefly? I mean the man did just write the screenplay for and direct the only 3D film worth watching and it must be raking in some cash.

Oh yeah, and watch it in 3D - if you've seen Avatar in 3D and tought it was a bit ropey like I did then this shows how it's meant to be done. I've not liked 3D at all until this film.

And there was a trailer for The Raid :)

It is.

Not the finest movie you'll ever see, reasonably predictable too, but it has a Whedonesque sense of humour and mischief about it despite some characters you could take or leave. And I can't imagine it would be as good in 2D (never thought I'd ever say that).

3D probably won't last though as there are too many bad conversions from 2D it else just bad films in general, plus the local cinema charges more for the privilege.

It used to cost £2.25 for a cinema ticket 16 years ago and now it's £12.50 :( They were posh seats though, but they weren't £12.50 good.

Not really one to watch remarkable or recent films, I just watched a fairly old film. The legendary "worst film ever", Ed Wood Jr's Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Basically, paranoid aliens from outer space who are worried earthlings will eventually destroy the universe try to preempt this by turning the dead into zombies and destroying the earth. They are thwarted by a pilot that flies planes with a half-circle of wood for a joystick, a policeman who needs gun-safety lessons, and some military chappy who first appears directing an army by standing in front of a sheet. Much of the film involves disconnected scenes running around a movie set cemetery.

"Because all you of earth are idiots."

It falls under the It's-so-bad-it's-good category of films. It helps to use the commentary from Rifftrax.com to go with it, but it is frankly hilarious enough by itself to go without it.

Now I think I need to have a lie down after that...

Ahh, Plan 9. A great double bill with Ed Wood.

Another fantastic double bill, incidentally, is Nosferatu, and then Shadow of the Vampire. Watch them back-to-back and have a superb time.

The Veteran. Soldier returns from Afghanistan, can't get a job, gets involved in a terrorist plot and local criminal goings-on instead. Toby Kebbell can't half act, and the film turns out to be more than just a brainless action film. I was very surprised. There are some manly scenes though, including some urban warfare style stuff that got me playing Frozen Synapse yet again. An unusual film, with some excellent sequences.

The Avengers.

My new standard on superhero movies. Simply put the best one of the bunch so far, I was ecstatic the whole movie, the Hulk was amazing, but all characters were fun to watch; hadn't had this much fun in the cinema in a long while.

Azreal, I agree. The only one, in my book, that topped the Avengers, was Batman The Dark Knight. But I can't compare the two, as it's one apple versus a bunch of oranges, or something like that. For a team of super-heroes, this one is the best.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The remake. If anything, Brendan Fraser is worse than Doug McClure, and the effects look even cheaper. This film was quite clearly made with some kid's lunch money. Yet it's so bad it's pathetic and worth laughing at, so worth a watch.

Off to see The Raid tomorrow night!

If I recall correctly it was one of the first films to come out in 3D, so you might note that a few things sort of got thrown at the camera a bit both in terms of real objects and CGI. They seemed to favour that over having good effects.

Something's got to give for me - I suspect I won't see this until it's out on DVD as I want to see Prometheus at the cinema and saw the Avengers at the cinema the other week. I just can't afford that many trips to the cinema as it's become too extortionate :( On the bright side I am saving my trips there for good films in 3D and enjoying everything else on my loud sound system at home :)

Mmm, just a little. Watched it in 2D and it was probably worse, with that awful 'soft' look to the CGI.

It's a total bloke film, but I must strongly recommend The Raid. 8/10 for some awesome fights and generally good action sequences. Dialogue is sub-par, the acting is so-so, but the direction, cinematography and choreography were top-notch, combined with a good, if over-enthusiastic use of sound effects and music. So many amazing kills. Please go and see it and support foreign language films in the UK!

I assume neither of those were particularly necessary to enjoy the film wink.png

It's been on my Raidar (*groan*) since you first mentioned it, so I will watch it at some point.

Oh man, that movie was worth taking a day off from work to watch it. Was even worth the overpriced popcorn.

I'd go watch it again if someone would pick up the tab this time. :)
