Paul had better be good. Looks like it could be good and the missus has agreed it's the perfect Valentune's Day film :P

Battle LA looks promising - without knowing anything about the plot it looks a little like where Independence Day could have gone instead of being a family movie.

:):P:)

Don't tell me you didn't find it awesome when it originally came out though. You know, back when we all had less taste/sense/eyes.

Nostalgia: Not what is used to be.

Survival of the Dead. What is Romero on these days? Good Lord. Dreadful script, dialogue, characters, effects, you name it. I keep watching his stuff in the vain hope any of it will be as good as the original Dead trilogy, but it all feels like something a wannabe director has ripped off from him.

As much as I like Ridley Scott (he lived in my town), he's made some right old shit recently (Robin Hood), and it's been years since he made an excellent film. Though, with the way things have been lately, I'd settle for an average Alien film.

Finally got to see The Last Airbender.

Technically and absolutely stunning in the visual department. Some of the fight scenes where the whole cast in the scene don't look sluggish or confused were good. I could even live with some of the strange casting decisions and casting completely different races for the nations being represented.

The story... oh dear. It's so heavily compressed and edited that it really is no more than a string of scene highlights strung together. The plot and many conversations are disjointed and a lot of important stuff is rushed and the unimportant stuff is dragged out. The odd pronunciation for some names were distracting. And where were the skull masks?

They really needed to spread this over two or three films. You need room to pace and properly present the story as well as some time to properly develop the supporting characters. I mean, at one point I was literally thinking "why are these two random nobodies getting a kissing scene?" - when the two characters involved are meant to be quite important characters.

In one way having prior knowledge of the series is both a blessing and a curse. Blessing in the sense that it helps piece together what's going on. A curse in that it's hard not to spend most of the time comparing the two.

It's fun, but also disappointing. Given a choice I'd recommend buying the first box set of the original series instead.

Let's not forget the "prison". Made about as much sense as, well... nothing.

I mean, you're locking up the A-Team in a fully-stocked warehouse with only one high school bully to watch over them and make sure they stay locked up. How does that even make sense??

And don't even try to defend the "pebble bending". Six earthbenders to lift a football-sized rock and one to shoot it. Before anyone tries to say anything about "perspective", note that the rock hits one of the guards in the chest, and it is sized for a football.

And the finale, oh god. What was supposed to be the best scene in the season that showcased the raw power the Avatar wields, was turned into a farce. "Oh noes! He's threatening our sea-worthy, watertight, ocean-going vessels with water! Run away!"

*sighs*

The way the water arched over the ships, you'd at least grant the audience the pleasure of concluding it with a splash that sends the ships far off to sea. By the way, why were Fire Nation soldiers bowing with the Water Tribe right after that? No restraints or attempts to flee.

Indeed. Earth bending is meant to be one of the strongest and most forceful of the four arts, yet what was that? Normally they would do a stunt like stamping the ground to send a moderately large boulder in the air and following through with a graceful kick to to launch it.

Probably blew the special effects budget animating the dribbly water and fire effects. ;)

Dead Space: Aftermath.

A bit poor. Some really good/shoddy animation/plotting/acting/dialogue. Doesn't help that it's basically a rehash of DS Downfall, but with the addition of cheap flashback storytelling that has almost definitely never been done before ever.

Quality is all over the place. About the only consistent thing is how gruesome it is.

Monsters.

Really liked this. Not actually wall-to-wall monsters as so many seem to have thought, more of a road movie about the two central characters. The monsters are mostly in the background, although the repercussions of their existence occupy a larger part of the story. The effects are surprisingly good for such a low budget, the acting and dialogue are solid, and overall the film has a fantastic atmosphere that millions of dollars could not buy. Some of the scenes felt strongly apocalyptic, despite the film as a whole not being so.

A must-see.

The Troll Hunter.

Norewgian film about, well, hunting trolls. It's in a fake documentary/recovered footage style (done to death by now, admittedly), as a film crew find out about a secret organisation that prevents trolls from causing widespread havoc in Norway. The creature design is in line with old depictions of them, which makes them seem a little out of place, more suited to Harry Potter than a modern film which is trying for a horror/fantasy angle.

However, the effects are quite good given the obviously low budget, and Norway looks damn spectacular. My biggest visual gripe is the night vision, which is, yet again, just a green filter. Jesus Christ, stop doing this, please. You can get real night vision on a budget these days, so get it or leave it out. Audio had some lovely deep bass in the roars, but beyond that I didn't notice much, and the presence of great audio for these things clashes, as how are they picking up audio good enough for a Dolby 23.1 track or whatever with the cheapest boom mic they can find?

Decent acting, some nice dialogue and troll lore, overall made for an enjoyable watch.
