New Fan-Project with high resolution!?

Hi folks,

I found a website, where on the main site there are news (dated October 17, 2002) of somebody called Red Knight "rebuilding" Ufo: Enemy Unknown, which looks terribly well. Concluding from the Geoscape pics that are shown it also looks a bit like Genesis.

X-COM: UFO

Anybody knows something about that project? If it has got a website? In what state the project is in? Whatever, chaps.

Kind regards,

Swordmaster

none cause infogames have no say... firaxis own x-com now don't they?

the question is, will they shoot it down?

if they had a brain they'd let it go ahead and then include it as a bonus with any x-com game they release in future.

Hey,

The link is already in the first post, but just in case you missed it, https://www.xcomufo.com/ :) The Geoscape look gorgeous but if this guy is working with hi-res, probably he will have to rewritte every single line of code from the X-Com games, 'cause I think it's nearly impossible to make such graphic improvement over an almost 10 years old engine. In the other hand, I believe he's doing some "port" for the two games just like people did with Doom I & II, Heretic and Hexen using the .WADs from the original game enhancing it with new textures, 3D models, flares, particles system and so on. For the curious or nostalgic players from the old school, go to https://www.doomsdayhq.com and you'll understand how great minds can make magic with C++. Again, only shots from the Geoscape aren't too much for a cetic guy like me, but if there's any hope, I'll embrace it and wait to see any combat screenshot or even a dedicated site to this miracle "upgrade" from a miracle man :)

Nice day,

Well, is he remaking it or reverse engineering it?

If it is an actual remake, then there'll be new algorithims for everything anyway, so the higher res will make zero impact on the dev time.

I was toying with the idea of doing a remake using DirectX, but I became rather daunted by the amount of graphical and sound work required. It would have been quite expanded, with many elements borrowed from Jagged Alliance 2, as well as full on hand-to-hand stuff.

Anyway, it's too much coding for it to look like crap because of my god-awful art, and way way too much work over all to do everything to a good standard as a one man team. If I had a sound guy, one or two art guys, and maybe an extra coder, I'd be on it like white on rice.

  • 2 weeks later...

So far, the project, named Xenocide, has its main web page here:

https://www.xcomufo.com/xenocide/

Please feel free to download the beta and test it on your system and send me feedback. There is much work left to be done on both the geoscape and battlescape. The program is written from scratch using OpenGL. It is intended to eventually be a combination of UFO Defense and Terror From the Deep.
