@Aralez:

I complained right on queue when my favorite map, the original Somme Map, disappeared. :D That one had interesting dynamics for me due to the missing slag deposits. Produced long entrenched Total Annihilation type game.

Summer coming.

My work is seasonal, and I don't do much with computers during the summer. Plus, my computers actually overheat and hang during the summer, at times, so I try to use them as little as possible, especially with games that are graphics intensive and heat up the room and the computer.

And, I personally have at least 10 Personal Messages to Aralez in which I was complaining or feedbacking about something in private. So, I didn't ignore Aralez as much as he said I did.

But yes, the last two weeks or so, all my work has come in, and this is my first post in as long a time. I won't be doing much. However, last night, I was hungering real bad for a C&C Zero Hour game or a Red Alert 2 game. Never found the time, but I was hungering real bad.

And, I too, thank Kernel for the use of the space. I imagine that if he keeps it around, well be swapping future DoW stuff when the expansions come out, or even be swapping stuff for Aftershock when it comes out.

Anyway, have a good one, and catch ya on the flip side.

Well, done the Defender map as Space Marines vs each of the other races on hard and so far found differences in when the AI attacks depends on the race it controls.

Against chaos the AI takes it's time a tries to go for defilers as soon as it can. This allows enough time to setup a good defense at the 2 LPs on your side of the gate.

Against Eldar or Orks you don't have time to setup such defense so the remaining choice is to have your forces behind the CP wall and defensive structures near the LPs on each corner.

Both the SM and CM fare quite well when upgrades with missile launchers and plasma. I find plasma to be the better option since the turrets add the heavy bolter power (twin-linked too)

BTW, a turret is not that much more expensive compared to 2 marines with heavy bolters

Turret: 150 req + 50 pow

Marines with 2 HB: 50x2 req (cost of 2 marines) + 40x2 req (cost of heavy bolter upgrade): 180 req + 10~20 pow

I forgot how much power each upgrade costs but I do think it remains bellow the turret's power cost, however the marines drain more req and early on a single turret can take a lot more punishment than 2 marines.

Aralez, tried your "backdoor" tactic in each game, qutie a lot of fun once you get to start dropping/summoning forces directly into enemy bases while their main force is getting crushed at the main gate.

I did attempt it with the orkz once, but using the same strategy as SM doesn't really work, mainly because the ork rockits aren't as effective as the SM ones. Next time I'll try the small squad tactic and try to keep them in a ready position for CC engagement.

Ok, i tried the map today with the Orks vs 4 SM. I played on hard and used the small squad technique. Amazingly there was ABSOLUTELY NO ENEMY activity for the first 10 minutes, i upgraded everything and all, LP with WaagBanners guarding them, all troops with Heavy Bolters and rockits and Nob-Bosses+Mad Doks attached. Then i teleported my BigMek with 6 attached Tankbustaz out (at the back of the fortress) and hoped to make some damage, i positioned some Wartrukks and -tracks (some of them upgraded to rockits and some to cannon) and i thought: Well, this looks ok so far.

Wrong

After getting my teleport-unit quickly smashed in a fight against several squads of Assault Marines/Dreadnoughts/FC, i teleported the rest back into my base and sent some grotz to build some mines in the entry zone.

Wrong again :D

It seems the mine-building somehow triggered the attack of the SM. They literally exploded into my base! It felt like shaking a Coke fore several minutes and then opening it. Amazingly my defence held them up for some minutes (seconds?), but slowly i ran out of everything and the suddenly appearing Landraider (supported by ~12 Dreadnoughts and 8 FC/Librarians) could not be stopped. The AI acted very clever as well, it used jumptroops to tie me down in CC and in the same time walked it's Dreadies into the back of the base, unleashing hell there.

I lost. :D

It was as i had thought before: The Orkz are no army for defence, no matter how upgraded your troops/Buildings may be, the enemy can simply wipe them away like cardboard buildings.

Hm, still no new patch, still no new mods, the tau mod in problems, the official forum slowly dying, well it looks like this will be another example of a good game being killed by bad support and the lack of updates...

How about proper fan-sites? Are there any?

  • 4 weeks later...

Right I am back and although my interest in this game has waned from its high point, I still am looking forward to the Winter Assault add on and will post some news on it as soon as I can.

I'll try and post some updates on the mods that are still alive aswell.

Hey all, sorry to just pimp my self, but have you played My map "Abandoned Faith" ? I've gotten little feedback from actual players, but it won relic's mapping contest. I know that you can get it at the relic forms and all over actually. It would be nice to get some feedback on it.

I've moved on to "silent storm" map making for the most part, but if people are really that into it I might finish off some of the maps I had started, but never felt were done.

And on another note; I know that were all here talking about it, but I think that DOW would not fit in with the other games here. (RPG elements/ turn based etc.), and I think that there are enough web resources out there for DOW, just my 2cents.

Your 2 cents are more then welcome here!

Slaughter I just drifted, I think when A said he was movin on from modding upset me!!! ;)

Its started when a couple of us here got into DOW big time and used to chat about it whilst we were here, Pete and Slaughter were ok with us on the old board and before we started another one here we checked with them again (or it might of been just Slaughter...sorry Pete... :( ) and we were permitted to use some space again.

On the upside I don't think this thread will get as much action as before.... I mean Tammys Love Nest has as many pages now!! Whats that all about!! :)

I wanna say a BIG hi to The General and A..... :(

Hi to you, too! ;) I still follow the posts on the relic forum and check the files at DOWFILES from time to time. The Daemonhunter mod has been updated, they have new walker units etc., not bad.

But still the promised patch hasn't been released (always the same problems with those computer games, ain't it ?)

I'm working on a tiny 2D game myself, maybe i can give you a small demo soon... (actually it's more like a small coffee-break-game, so don't expect anything dramatic).

@vs322: I haven't gotten around to playing any MP at all. Neither your map nor Aralez's. But congratulations on winning! ;)

Regarding making more maps, I personally would rather see you devote your time to Silent Storm/Sentinels. If you need some time off S2 however, maps are welcome for DOW! The players here have been quite active, and I'm sure some of them are up for playing another match or two.

As for a DOW section here, I agree with you and BB. I did consider it, but it wouldn't fit.

There is one thing that WOULD be okay if needed however. We could make a category in the files section where you can host your maps and stuff. I don't know if Kernel's server is still up, but it would be a shame if Aralez's maps and stuff isn't available anymore.

@shagpuss: Yeah, I were a little stressed out about that myself. The Aftermath community (and eventually your little DOW section) took a hard blow after we moved. But it's good to see you back, and I hope you'll stay :)

@BB: IF I get the time to play some MP, I'll make you EAT THOSE WORDS! :(
