Alpha_Male
Hello everyone,Just bought Silent Storm a week ago and i have to say it's a good game, altough far from perfect. The one thing that comes to my mind more often than not is "JA2 should of looked this way..."because mechanics/playabilty wise,SS could of picked up a few things, isntead of winking an eye Fallout's way...(Great RPG,but this isnt supposed to be an rpg.) -The class thing isnt that bad,but some of them came out short in terms of actual potential (Engineer). They'd need more things to be done, such as weapon repairs/upgrades,more explosives related tasks,or simply a improved mechanic for these.maybe it's the setting's fault (what IS it with ww2 these days?) that doesnt allow the full plethora of tactical goodness that would make such a class rock in a modern day setting. -they did a pretty good job with weapons, wich provides us with all that juicy variety of choices we like, however: -id have liked to have seen shotguns:for indoor's/close quarters use it would of been a nice addition if not for the sheer coolness factor. -In the Heavy weapons department,i would have liked to have had a Flame-Thrower,if nothing else,it is wicked piece, altough im a bit unsure if it could be properly rendered in-game. -The Crossbow, one of the more unusual weapons used by the Oss at the time, would of made for a nifty addition, being quite silent. -Molotov Cocktails. -i toughrouly dislike most of the sci-fi/Panzerklein stuff, mostly due to it unbalancing the game, and also due to it just being a bad idea to begin with.the concept of advanced/exotic weaponry could of been handled in a mutch more tastefull, balanced way...maybe establishing prototypes for weaponry we have today.(experimental assault rifles, grenade throwers,Machine pistols,or more wierd "beleivable" weapons like the Sea Devil.) -wished Nival would of added the control over Height/body type they managed to pull off in Evil Islands, even if at the expense of the face thing.something like clothing/armor slots would of been welcomed, even if body armor played little importance in WW2 (again,if you wanted to go sci-fi,that would of been a good lead,NOT walkable tanks). -speaking of clothing, more variety of uniform and some more realistic ones would of been great(aside from the ones that were already there...i dont remember WW2 uniforms designed by Jean-Paul Gautier.(in due fairness,Axis Scout&Grenadier were quite good...). -Dual wielding of pistols(or other one handed weapons, however rare) would of been nice.if a bit too flashy,it is quite fun. -It would of been original if we could of built/customized out entire squadron. Also..campaigns are too damm short!!!the random encounters are too small to provide any real fun or challenge compared to the actual missions. Im probably just being petty and demanding too mutch from a single game, but it's how i feel. It's a lot os hard work and efford to put out a game, and im not trying to demerit the development team, anyone that's tried Modding a game knows how hard it is to put out even the simplest of things. In a nutshell:Wished they had looked at a lot mroe JA and less Fallout...Also:screw the expansions make a damm Sequel.
Alpha_Male
People, you can and should give me some feedback...something along the lines of "Yup","Nah,yer wrong","But i think..." etc....apreciate it.*s*
Kevs77
I concur with the sci-fi thing. Don't worry about no one responding, I noticed this myself as I posted something and got 15 views and not a word. I think this forum is pretty dead or just has a few, hard core followers that even browse and answer anymore.
Biggles
-The class thing isnt that bad,but some of them came out short in terms of actual potential (Engineer). Agreed. This has been looked at in Sentinels, and hopefully we'll see more distiction between classes. -id have liked to have seen shotguns:for indoor's/close quarters use it would of been a nice addition if not for the sheer coolness factor. A common request, but modelling multiple projectiles from a single shot may have been a show stopper. Why not do one in a mod? -In the Heavy weapons department,i would have liked to have had a Flame-Thrower,if nothing else,it is wicked piece, altough im a bit unsure if it could be properly rendered in-game. Discussed a fair bit. This was left out due to ratings. Nival would have had problems distributing the game in some countries -The Crossbow, one of the more unusual weapons used by the Oss at the time, would of made for a nifty addition, being quite silent. Another one that should be moddable. Actually I think there is a crossbow like OSS weapon in the game. -Molotov Cocktails. See flamethrowers -i toughrouly dislike most of the sci-fi/Panzerklein stuff, mostly due to it unbalancing the game, and also due to it just being a bad idea to begin with.the concept of advanced/exotic weaponry could of been handled in a mutch more tastefull, balanced way...maybe establishing prototypes for weaponry we have today.(experimental assault rifles, grenade throwers,Machine pistols,or more wierd "beleivable" weapons like the Sea Devil.) This is a GAME, it's a story, and an alternate universe that these guys created. I just don't get why people don't understand this and complain about the PKs so much. -wished Nival would of added the control over Height/body type they managed to pull off in Evil Islands, even if at the expense of the face thing.something like clothing/armor slots would of been welcomed, even if body armor played little importance in WW2 (again,if you wanted to go sci-fi,that would of been a good lead,NOT walkable tanks). This seems pretty unimportant to me, the sort of feature that would probably get cut pretty early to make way for gameplay. -speaking of clothing, more variety of uniform and some more realistic ones would of been great(aside from the ones that were already there...i dont remember WW2 uniforms designed by Jean-Paul Gautier.(in due fairness,Axis Scout&Grenadier were quite good...). I thought these were pretty good. But anyway, theres a few mods that deal with clothing. In Sentinels you can change clothes, which is nice. -Dual wielding of pistols(or other one handed weapons, however rare) would of been nice.if a bit too flashy,it is quite fun. My guess is that the extra animations and other requirments that implementing this would require make it pretty unfeasible. -It would of been original if we could of built/customized out entire squadron. yeah.. it would have been a different game. Also..campaigns are too damm short!!!the random encounters are too small to provide any real fun or challenge compared to the actual missions. YEah the campaign could be pretty short. That's the problem with a campaign that is semi random. Some people found the right clues quickly and had a short campaign, while others got a long campaign as they didn't get the clues needed to progress. I think rather than being to small, the random encounters just weren't quite varied enough. Im probably just being petty and demanding too mutch from a single game, but it's how i feel. It's a lot os hard work and efford to put out a game, and im not trying to demerit the development team, anyone that's tried Modding a game knows how hard it is to put out even the simplest of things Nah... we all see the potential, and wish for more. It's a balance I guess the developers have to make between time/money and features. My friends and I have heaps of ways we'd improve the game, but you need to look at it in it's own right, and not as a sequel to JA or UFO. It's more action based than those games, they had a bigger management side and overall strategy, but a lot of todays market just wants to get in and shoot things. another rant over
Alpha_Male
Well, nice to actually get awnsers in this forum.*s* Biggles:-modding the effects of the shotguns isnt that hard, thanks to the "shots in one" feautre nival supplied...i also manages to find a ammo that does a nifty enough job of simulating the buchot effect in both it's strenghts at close quarters and it's weakeness in long range and penetration...all id need at this stage is the graphical icing on the cake that would be an actualy Browning 5 semi-auto shotgun model.Had Nival catered the import/export scripts to #DStudio max instead of maya,id have it done myself.(let's hope someone decides to write one.) As for the crossbow-like weapon you mention,i beleive you refer to the lil Joe (whose ammo is currently doubling as my
Biggles
I think Lotekk actually modellied some weapons, perhaps even a shotgun. He's one of the moderators on the official forums. (It may have been someone else.. it was a while back) I'd love to see a shotgun mod released! The reason I think the body types are more hassle than facial ypes is that Nival used a specific dev kit to do the faces, whereas changes to body size affect more than just looks. You'd possibly need to have alternate animations, and the objects that hang off your uniform (like granade etc) would be harder to make sure they looked right for all body types. Alpha_Male
Well,if you ever manage to remember who was it,ans if it's downloadable,do put a link here, please.*s* As i said before,i can model and Texture (also a grooby concept designer.)well enough to get by,but dont have acess to Maya,so if anyone out there wants to give me a hand and just do the import/export thing, lemme know.*L*
