Paladin155
I started modding UFO: Aftermath about two weeks or so ago. I'm mainly concentrating on modding for weapons and armor for the time being. However, I'm having trouble with the icons and 3d models. At the current time I don't have any workable tools for editing 3d models - the one semblance thereof I do have is still in terms of Quake 1 models - and the cheapest one I know of at this time is upwards of $100. Does anyone have any reccomendations for a less expensive way to edit the game models? If not, I can just put the models on the back burner for the time being. As for the icons, right now, I'm thinking that the icons should be editable in Paintshop or Photoshop. Does anyone know off the top of their heads if this is a correct assumption or not? Thanks a lot
Aralez
Atm, i don't know of a moddeling software The icons are simple Targa-files with masked areas, but you need to change some txt files, too to add stuff. Beware, some of them are compressed txt-files, so you'll need a hexeditor.
sigget
Compressed textfiles? They're compressed when stored inside .vfs-files but not when extracted.
Aralez
Some model-files are compressed and have the TXT ending, that's what i meant. Like the *.txt- files for the icons. If you want you can decompress them with one of the official tools. (ufobintxt.exe) I prefer to edit them with a hexeditor to skip that step in work
Fulby
Aralez, by "compressed" do you mean that the text files have binary data in them? I wouldn't consider them compressed if that's what you're meaning, though I can see your point of view that binary takes up less space then ASCII encoded text. I think of them more as binary files with a lot of text delimiters Fulby
Aralez
Hm, well, yes that's what i meant! :o
Cpl. Facehugger
3d modelling progs? I know of Blender and Milkshape. One of them is Free (Open source, even better! ) and the other one has a registration fee of like 25$. Those are the model progs that the poorer xenocide art people use. They are hard to use if you don't know 3d modelling though (take it from me! ) Just search a google for em and I'm sure you'll find it.
Aralez
I tried Anim8or, another freeware 3d editor, but it doesnt support the files in UFOAM Don't know about Blender, i have it somewhere...
Paladin155
Thanks for the tips, everyone. Sorry it took me so long to get back to it. I've been really busy the past several days. Hopefully I'll have time to finish my mods up soon.Again, thanks a lot.
sigget
You wont find any programs able to save to the aftermath model format, it was developed by ALTAR and hasnt been used by any other games, its documented in the mod tools so anyone with enough time and skills can develop programs or plugins to 3d modelers that edits these files. Cpl. Facehugger
Well...Altar must have made plugins themselves, right? Couldn't they just release those to the modding community?
