What is peopdensity.tga used for?

Ive figured out what most of these lookup textures are for but i dont understand this one. When is the population density needed? For generating missions? For calculating the number of bodies on the ground? For calculating the biomass growth rate?

 

Im lost, do you have any ideas?

It seems likely that this map is used to determine wether a mission takes place in a city or out in the open. The large densities of this planet is in europe, eastern USA and northern india. Have you experienced an increased amount of city missions there?

I modified the images slightly so it's clearer to see the colour differences.

This is how the game determines what environment, terrain, vegetation and building type (european, asian, american etc.) to use when generating a map.

Please correct me if I am wrong on any of it, I've not done extensive testing but they're what I think would seem make sense.

I've probably missed out some terrain/vegetation types etc, so let me know which ones. They don't seem to be listed anywhere in gamedata.vfs (that I could find anyway).

I had a go at making them colour, but didn't find an easy way which kept it accurate. The bigger pics should make it easier to see though :)

Great, could you include cities and peopdensity aswell? use the normalize/equalize function on peopdensity after setting the sea color to black. The vegetation and land areas are described in tactical/configs/generator, there's a file for each area.

 

EDIT: Oh sorry, they were included. Would you change them to color? The seven shades of grey in cities.tga are difficult to seperate, not to mention the 64 shades in land_map.tga :power:
