the_dead
How do I put multiple operating systems on a PC without screwing it up?I have old versions of windows and dos lying around and I'm wondering if installing them as well will help my UFO problems.I don't want to do it until I know a foolproof (as I am a fool) way of doing it without killing anything. Strong Bob
Uh, I don't really think there's a way to do it. Unless you have two harddrives, and even then I doubt it can be done, your computer can only start up with one O/S soft.
Alan
thats not quite true. you can have as many OS's on a pc as you have room for. Of course though, you can only actually be running one at a time, but you can select which each time you turn on your pc. t'is called dual booting. basically your create a partition for each OS, then install them in a certain order, and *usually* it works. Unless of course you mess up one of the steps. And of course, unless you're quite tech-clever then setting them up can result in wiping all your data. there are instructions on the net, go google. cyrus
Yes, you can have as many OSes as your boot manager will allow. So find some boot manager first (Now I don't remember the particular names, but search the web). Then choose, what systems you want to install. I'd suggest XP as the main system (the one that will be loading by default) and Win98 as supplemental (or even Win95, but you want this system for old DOS games, right, and Win98 supports DOS programs quite good, I haven't any problems running DOS games under Win98). Then install theese systems. Maybe it's better to have some friend by your side, who knows, how things done.
BladeFireLight
depending on the OS's involved this is easy, Install DOS then 98 with dual boot then 2k or XP with the dual boot option in install and you will have a 3 OS sytems with a verry bad cluster size actualy 98 then XP is suficiant. I dont know about any Linux the multiple hard drive method works really well, you simply use the bios to swap what drive is the boot one. and install each OS to separate drive -Blade FireLight
Crazy Photon
You can install as many OSs as you want, you just have to be careful about partitioning the hard disk drive correctly and the order of which you install them. The order should be Win9x -> Win2k/XP -> Linux. I had myself 2 Win98, 1 Win2k and Linux on the same hard disk. If you don't care much about performance you can also create virtual PCs, which allow you to have multiple OSs running AT THE SAME TIME. Just look for VMWare of VirtualPC for that (they're not free though).
the_dead
Well now I don't have to bother with using the multiple OS to get UFO working, I decided to try booting in SAFE MODE, not expecting it to actually work, but to my surprise it did, I can't have any sound but at least I can play the game without any other problems now
