Patch Affecting Difficulty?

hello

 

cheers to the boys and girls for getting two patches out so soon

 

(normally i would grumble that if they're out so soon why couldn't it be put in before launching the game, but the second patch has gameplay improvements that people asked for so all is forgiven seeing as they listen to their fans. which is fantastic, see the greyhawk temple of elemental evil for a bad example that game is just a bugfest and they just don't care)

 

anyway onto the issue at hand

 

i have just updated to patch 1.2 from a clean install and started the game afresh.

 

its quite a lot harder than the last three games i started, 2 easy, 1 normal on patch 1.1

 

i checked with the help file and my text option in my profile

 

profile has : KEY "difficulty" INT 2

help on the site has : "KEY "difficulty" INT 2". 0 = Hard, 1 = Medium and 2 = Easy

 

so i should be on easy right?

 

well how come i'm getting massacred by grays and serverly whopped by mutants? when last time i started a game i put it on normal for more of a challenge

 

has the gray plasma gun being totally modded to be a fantastic weapon cause i believe these are what are ripping me to pieces?

 

so is it just me or has anyone else noticed?

I have noticed a few more of these rare ambushes you hear about - rounding corners to find transgenants waiting there for me and not having them sprint across a base at me leaving a trail of tell-tale open doors for me to locate them by like they usually do.

 

The pathfinding seems to be much improved too.

 

As for general difficulty, I've only just forgiven myself for losing my entire squad to a balloon fish and I put that down to playing it on Hard difficulty for the first time :withstupid:

The 1.2 patch does seem to making some rather marked differences on the game, and I don't know if these are good, or not? :hmmm:

 

Decided to patch the game with the latest patch, and give it a quick go (on "easy" this time) just to see if this made any real difference.

 

Several seemed to pop up, notably: seemed to gain far less experience than used to; new squad members seem to be of a generally bad calibre, and I mean really bad; it now seems to be very hard to gain decent weaponry in any quantity, and it is very hard to find any kind of quantity of ammo for these weapons; some of the later types of "human" weaponry became available to me almost immediately; and; some pretty difficult mission types started appearing almost instantaneously.

 

Several times I found myself facing heavily armed and armoured Reticulans with just UZi's and Shotguns, which is not very pleasant.

 

All this on "easy" level. It actually felt harder to progress in the game than when I completed it on "hard", which, to me, seems rather strange.

 

Wot's going on.

 

This seems to be a retrograde step to me! :withstupid:

Rebear - the new squad member stats are generated randomly - you'll notice that every time you star tthe game, even on the same difficulty, Malcolm and Brian's stats are different every time.

 

The same is true for which missions pop up and when. Just the luck of the draw. I'd hazard a guess that the same is true of when weapons pop up.

 

As for experience points - even on hard setting you could have guys up to level 12 by teh end of January, so I welcome this.

 

It's actually balancing up more like (wait for it...) and X-COM game where the difficult missions are there from the start (or rather the missions are easy and the bad guys are crack-shots;)).

 

Haven't got past the first month yet so I can't comment any further :withstupid:

Jeezus .......... wish they would make their minds up 'bout what they are actually doin', 'cos now it almost feels like a different game. Looks same, plays differently.

 

Ah well, go mess with Ghost Recon for a while then have another go. :withstupid:
