Nightshade
I'm not sure if there is already a thread about this. I'm a bit short of time so I cant look, If theyr'e is close the thread. My Problem is:I played TFTD religioulsly on my old comp till I got Apocalypse then fergot about it. but now I have a new updated comp with XP I have problems installing the game. (I haven't tried TFTD yet) I get 2 the install menu and I choose a size to install it (tried em all) and it wil check everything so fast I have no chance 2 read them. It will get to checking CD-Rom speed and freeze. I can still minimize the window and close it from the startbar and I have tried everything I can think of(which probably wont b much) The CD-Rom I have is a 40x (not sure of the exact figure) DVD player/burner. Does anyone have any ideas? or has Microsoft found another way 2 kill Apocalypse.
Strong Bob
How long have you been waiting when the screen freezes? It might just be having a hard time scanning the thing...
Nightshade
No it freezes straight away, It scans the other stuff so fast I cant read it then it will freeze on scanning cd-rom
Strong Bob
That doesn't answer my question. How long have you been waiting when the thing supposedly freezes?
Nightshade
Straight away, would the DVD burner make a difference?
Strong Bob
Perhaps I'm not making myself clear. When the installation freezes, how long do you wait before determining that it has frozen? If the window itself is functioning fine and it just isn't doing anything it might be just taking a lot longer than normal. I know that during my installation it takes it's time after checking the CD-ROM and such, and most XP users simply cannot run the installation from the start so it can't be that. And no, I don't think it's your DVD burner. I don't see how it would make a difference.
Nightshade
The longest I've left it is about 40mins, and it shows up on task manager as not responding.
Strong Bob
It must be just XP then. If you own the Apocalypse CD, as in bought and paid for it, then it's okay to just download it. You can just throw it on your system "pre-installed" pending on where you get it.
Bomb Bloke
Well... legal, depending on where you live. Some (most) companies now like to push the idea that the media is the license, so in some countries it is illegal to backup your software.
Nightshade
I'll try uninstalling the burner software. I bought the CD legally about a year ago but it was from a second hand store so I just got the CD and nothing else. I may just have 2 get the new Xcom. NKF
There's bound to be some way to manually install the game. There was for UFO and TFTD. If only I had a computer I could crash-test test this theory on... Can you get anywhere near selecting what install mode you want? Or does the system test come before this? It's been a while since I installed my copy, so I've forgotten the install procedure completely. What about... no, I don't think XP has a pure dos mode. How about the dosbox dos emulator? Would it be possible to install the game thorugh it? Anyone? Would it even be possible? The only other solution I can think of would be what I mentioned in the other forum. Install it via a network. Either by installing it over the network (by mapping the destination drive as a drive on the computer you're using to install the game), or by installing it on one computer that can install it, and then copying the entire game directory structure over the network to the computer that you want to run it on. But this assumes your PC can network and you have another PC nearby, or if you can get someone to bring along a laptop and network it with your computer. - NKF
Ki-tat Chung
network is always possible, if install is the only problem, but remember to configure the sound properly. dosbox should work, i know it does for TFTD, and thus UFO. i havn't tried apoc, because it takes ages just for tftd to load, and i don't want to even try apoc...(my comp is a PII you see...) NKF
Can't get through the intro? I've had that happen a few times. Have you tried skipping it? Assuming xcomapoc is what you use to run the thing, try to start it with the following command: xcomapoc skip You can do it either from the command prompt, the run menu, or you can even make a shortcut to it, then edit the shortcut and add skip right after xcomapoc.exe. Just make sure the target name is surrounded in parenthesis, so it looks like "c:\games\xcoma\xcomapoc.exe skip", for example. It probably won't work, but try it anyway. If that doesn't work, open up sound setup and disable the soundcard and try running the game again. I know, it's probably not even remotely related, but try it anyway. - NKF
Spart_acustard
Well believe it or not. i was reading one of the other threads on this site and it was talking about a crack. i clicked the link downloaded the crack and BOOM im playing apoc for the first time in nearly a year.. if i knew i was just a click away i wouldve done it the day i got it. :bomber: im so happy! :alien2: only problem now is, the mouse is really super slow during play :hmmm: .. any ideas how to get around it..? AND the sounds all stuttery. ive tried all the other sound options but nothing comes out of the speakers when theyre selected. am i doomed to have a barely playable version of x-com all my life!
