GazChap
I've now got the Collector's Edition CD's (two copies in fact, so if anyone wants to buy one, drop me a private message ) I can't seem to install X-COM Apocalypse though. I'm running Windows 2000 Service Pack 3. It all works fine until it gets to the bit where it asks me where I want to install it, and then the install program just hangs. It also complains about there not being enough files/buffers and the CD-ROM speed being "error" but as it doesn't seem to prevent me installing it I'm not bothered about those yet. Is it possible to install it just by copying the contents of the XCOM3 directory over to the hard drive somewhere? Are registry keys created anywhere? I shouldn't think so if its an MS-DOS game, but I thought I'd better check. I've got a Windows98SE virtual machine on my PC which I will try next, but any help on getting it to work in Windows 2000 would be much appreciated guys
Mouse Nightshirt
Apocalypse needs to run on pure DOS, which Windows 2000 doesn't have; you can do it, but its a hell of a lot of work. However, it will run perfectly well on your Win 98 machine.
Justmade
I got exactly same problem when installing my good old Apocalypse CD in my Window 2000 SP3 system. It complain CDROM speed and files buffer but let me choose drive. After choosing drive, the install program quit. I know may dos game is not supported in 2K/XP but as I see many discussion on how to PLAY it on 2K/XP with some hacks and fixs, there should be a way to INSTALL it first, right ? Thanks for any help. DragonHawk
https://www.x-com.co.uk/forums/index.php?ac...cf508ae837adb6a Try the stuff mentioned in Ooda's first post (it's somewhere in the middle of the first page). It might help.
Silpion
Ok, I got this problem, too. :hmmm: Win2k+SP3, Apoc freezes at the same point mentioned above. I can't use VirtualPC because I don't want to buy it and install an old OS just for playing this game. There simply has to be a legal solution without additional costs. Perhaps it would help to know the directory structure, including files, to fake a successful installation.
DragonHawk
Did you try the stuff that Ooda suggested? If you'd like to know the file structure, send me an email and I'll look it up and post it back here sometime in the next week.
Silpion
I have tried several slowdown utilities, VDMSound and I tried to use a bootable FreeDOS CD but my MS-DOS mouse driver doesn't want to work with it. I can't use Virtual PC because it costs 259 $. Does anyone know if it is possible to run X-Com Apocalypse on Linux?
DragonHawk
OK, with some help from Silpion, here's the file structure as I have it. Note that I patched the tacexe folder with the patch on this forum, but have not yet patched the UFOexe... regardless, it's just one more file in that folder, and I think the size might be different. Again, thanks to Silpion for teaching me some new tricks. *EDIT* OK, due to post size limitations, the entire thing didn't copy on. Let me see if there's a better way...
