what if we could make colonies in UFO more like the colonies in TFTD?

 

i.e.: with two levels, where X-com agents will actually have to fight their way into the base first...

 

i'm already working on an upper level map, but due to my short-sightedness, i just made one big 50x50 map, instead of making tiles like any other normal map...

hmm i don't know, that sounds like an exe thing to me.............and we all know what that means. it could be possible if someone worked on it but my programing and hack skills aren't the highest in the world......for goodness sakes i'm having trouble writing a damn batch file!!!....its makin progress though, i think it would be cool to have something like that though. make the game more interesting and as anyone can tell you interesting is better!

It might not require an .exe modification. In fact, it could probably be done with a bit of clever batch file programming and an in-between program of some sort to recreate the battlescape files, like the map, routes, etc.

 

Of course, the number of problems that can crop up with this method are so numeorus that it might not be entirely worth the effort.

P. S: Another thought occured to me. What if we did away with the Geoscape aspect of the game and made our own? Just as long as it generated the right files for use with Tactical.exe, it would fit in just nicely! Ahh, ignore me. Just thinking wild thoughts again.

I was already looking in to this...

 

just to add to the posiblities...

 

how about landing at what you think is a medium scout... but instead it's laded at a previously unknown base... If you abort a Alien base is added to the geoscape... othewize you have proceade to the second level of the base. hopefully you were prepaired :P

 

as for the 50x50 map... i'm working on that to... but dont hold your breath...

 

If any one wants to help... I need some saved games....

 

for UFO just befor a base defence... alein base raid.. and the cydonia mission...

 

for TFTD just befor a ship liner raid and a aleing base or artiface missions and befor the T'leth mision....

 

again.. that is before the landing... not _in_ tactical.

That would be posible... but what fun would it be?

I suposed you could make a util to extrace a team from a saveed game to use against random encounters... but the loss of men would mean nothing... I think it would get boring after a while

just a suggestion, would it be easier to mod tftd so that it's actually the original x-com, just with 2 lvl bases, and some 2 lvl terror missions? I'm not sure about the geoscape portion, but tactical would probably be easier to do this way. Just a suggestion, since it seems tftd and ufo both use the same file formats, or at least, they're easy to convert

There are some techincal reasons this would not compleatly work... a total conversion is posible... but some features would not work... like air combat over the oceans...

 

also the file formats are not compleatly compatible...

 

I find that doing a Hybrid version to be a more apealing approach... (probably why i'm working on that)

well, i decided to have a closer look at the tftd maps for the upper level of the colonies, and i've been re-working my idea for an alien colony in UFO, and i've come up with this for the elevator tile;

the top is designed for easy access to the elevator from ufo's hovering overhead, however, it also offers a prime area for X-com troops to enter (if they're properly equipped, and ready to enter an area with absolutely NO cover :P )

edit: forgot to mention, the large open areas at each of the corners are landing areas for skyrangers/avengers/lightnings, 3 areas where each can land

Just a thought: Have you considered putting doors on the upper level that lead out onto the roof? You could have a few fixed alien spawn locations on the roof to act as pesky snipers that'll harass your soldiers as they try to get into the facility.

actually, i did, yes, but there's just not enough places that i can put doors that would have decent access to the roof, and then it would be sooooo much more rmp work :P although i am putting in routes for flying units (floaters etc...) to access the roof.

 

once i'm done the rmp work, i'll put the files up for download for all to see :(
