Hobbes
Today I decided to make a search on "The Unknown Menace" out of curiosity to see what results I would get. One of its results was this and since it was on a LOTR site it spiked my curiosity to see what an X-Com related thread was there. Guess what an unpleasant suprise it was He even claims that the story is on the making for 5 years, curiously enough before when I started writing it (in 2001), which made me wonder if it is a way to say that I stole the story from him. And he even says that the initial pages are crap, which they are since english is not my first language, not because he is a bad writer. But, not happy with stealing the beginning of my fanfiction, he also stole part of TFTD's booklet, namely the Jake Gaston story (scroll down the thread to see it). Some people are stupid.... Zombie
Don't let this guy get under your skin Hobbes. I personally think your English is great. Probably better than most people in the US these days. I read the Jake Gaston from TFTD's booklet and it does appear that part of it was stolen by this guy. Tsk, Tsk! Not to mention ripping off a concept originally created by someone else. Not cool! Don't worry, this guy will pay eventually for what he did. I hope... Strong Bob
This has happened to me before. A movie script I was writing for about three years was once stolen and posted online in several places by someone I once thought a friend. I never copyrighted it myself, so in the end I was screwed. I guess I should thank him though... The heavy criticism against that particular script, along with the trouble of forcing me to start over, caused me to make a much better one. Only this time, nobody gets to see it until it's done!
FullAuto
Cheeky little sod. I'm glad I've got a little bit of protection sorted out for my Agents fic now that I've seen this.
Strong Bob
Actually, you might be too late, Hobbes. The story is over a year old, and this guy likely doesn't even attend the forum you found this in anymore. Probably should've tried that search engine thingy sooner... Hobbes
His last post on that forum was a month ago. I've send a message to the forum administrator telling him what the situation was and I expect them to take action, either by deleting the entire thread or by banning the user since he is in violation of the forum's terms of usage. I have considered notifying Atari for them to sue his hide but that might prove contraproductive to us all (since Infogames had such a strict policy on fan made material).Since this is all fanfic I don't have any rights over that material but at least I won't admit anyone to claim it. And the best way to do it, like copyright law says, is to publish it somewhere. You can't have rights over ideas, only over finished works.
