FullAuto
Hey, give me a battle situation and I'll hand you back a gunfight as kinetic as you want, but back at base, it's dialogue and good God am I paranoid about writing dialogue, especially for other people's characters. The Veteran
I prefer the good, moving the storyline along personally bit The missions themselves are a big part of the game but in the game the soldiers were faceless mindless (mostly Russian named) zombies. The fic is more personal so we need a bit of BAB dialogue evcery so often.
FullAuto
I totally agree, the base scenes have to be the base (terrible pun, apologies) of the story. I'm hoping (along with everyone else) to make the fights as memorable as possible, along with the soldiers, and in order to do that, we have to empathise with them, at least a tiny bit. That process begins at the base scenes, even if it is more strongly reinforced by the battle scenes. So, to sum up: Don't honestly think I can do the character's justice (for now) in a base scene. Alitorious
Well, darn it. I can't do character development. At least it's sorta a post, but it's a dumb 'techie' one again, and probably doesn't make much sense because I'm tired. Oh, well, I guess... Later on I'll try to make actual character development, especially for Brute. (All the more fun to mind control him in the terror mission, eh? )
FullAuto
Alitorious, it's a post, and it's a back at base post, which is what's needed. Well done, that man.
JellyfishGreen
Yeah, finally some movement. I see you've set the stage for a break-in? Should we attract Loonie's (Terrick's) attention?
Alitorious
Yep, that was the point of it. I didn't know how to write for Terrick, otherwise I would have started him rolling myself.
The Veteran
That's the most depressing post I've ever written but if it gets you guys moving then its a good thing! Oh and by the way... I'm back!
FullAuto
Ahem. He's heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere! Welcome back Vet!
JellyfishGreen
Whew! Now I can go on my vacation next week without worrying about the fic moving too slowly!
The Veteran
Don't count your chickens guys... I've finally managed to get hold of internet access on base but it'll be at least a fortnight before I can start using it! It sucks but I don't have the unbridled power to do anything about it
JellyfishGreen
Anyone who's made new characters recently, would they like to be drafted to fill out Squad 2 back to its complement of 10? Or even Squad 1, which will likely see promotion sooner?
Hankosha
I have returned. I'll be back again in two weeks.
FullAuto
Ok, so we've got Johann (controlled by Spaceman42) transferring to a squad, plus Ghost (controlled by Fatigue, haven't seen him for ages, Snikers has intro'd Ghost in the last post though) and Bomber (controlled by Bomb Bloke). And we've got space in squads 1 & 2, so does anyone have any preference as to which squad or are we flipping coins/rolling dice or what? Bit of a post there too, and I'm wincing in preparation for the criticism. Thanks to Snikers for setting that one up for me. Happy Birthday, mate! Snikers
Ooh! Yay! I love it! You're a great writer. So it seems not all of us are restricted to combat writing, eh?
FullAuto
Snikers, you practically wrote that one for me. You set me up on that, so half the credit goes to you. Well, that's only my second ever post in this fic, and my first try at a dialogue back at base scene. I'm glad I did ok.As for the squad assignments, I think people should just pick what squad they want, or we'll have to ASSIGN them to a squad. And I'm sure no-one wants that. Come on, people! THis is OUR fanfic. Choose what squad you want your lads and lasses to join! Squad 2 is:Kilam Chung (Heavy weapons)K. Green (rifleman/sniper)C. Andrews (pistol scout)H. Escalante (squad leader/corporal, I think?)C. Keller (rifleman/woman/whatever)B. Dujardin (rifleman/medic)G. Duchante (deomlitions)N. Wexford (down as rifleman, but had an AC last mission) So we've got two spaces, seeing as Ross is injured & Wethers is dead. Squad 1 is:J. Thomas (heavy weapons)T. Hillard (rifle/medic)T. Day (pistol scout)E. Dodge (rifleman)M. Terrick (rifleman)R. Chez (rifleman)J. Donovan (rifleman) Chen and O'Malley got killed, Jennings got wounded (only slightly, still operational?) and so did Ki-tat Chung (seriously, non-operational) so we've got a maximum of four spaces going. Roll up, roll up!
Bomb Bloke
Howitz joins squad 1 as the demolition/medic unit.

Alitorious
I'm just curious: Is anyone going to write for Terrick to steal some motion-tracker concept stuffs?
FullAuto
Unless someone else wants to write it, I suppose I'll do it. Edit: Don't all rush forward at once.
Alitorious
Heh, that's good, Auto, for taking up the ball. (I kinda feel like the guy who passed the ball, and then discovered that no one was there to catch it ) I don't really trust myself with Terrick, as I don't really know what a spy would do to get in and out without being detected. FullAuto
I don't suppose there's a list of the security measures that are in place in the labs? Or is that too much to hope for?
Bomb Bloke
Uh, which side is Terrick on, and whose labs is he supposed to raid? Excuse my lazieness.
FullAuto
Terrick is working for X-Com (obviously) but he's also doing a bit of espionage for a company that's holding his family hostage and he's meant to be nicking/copying any new technology that X-Com develops, so he'll be raiding the physics lab mostly, I suppose. JellyfishGreen
Hey Vet, you can't just knock out Genega and then leave the party! At least leave a comment here about how the rest of us are supposed to write about it! And it's a bit soon for the base to be moping, as the terror site mission is still fast approaching. That'll give us something to lose morale over alright. Fullauto: nice episode. I was writing Dujardin as more French (perhaps Cajun?) rather than colloquial American but it's all good. I didn't handle the Green Beret background well but you did. As for lab security: there's keycard protection on the elevators, stairwells (except during fire alarms), and labs branching off the Science level hallway, and at least one MP per level. I didn't postulate cameras but it would make sense to have a few (in the hallways?). Computer access is logged on the servers. The keycards aren't magnetic-stripe - I envisioned a system like at my own work, where you merely touch the card to a sensor, but I must confess I'm not sure how it works, so I can't be sure what Ki-tat's character would have needed to perform his hack. (Not just a laptop, though ) Card numbers are supposed to be unique, the door computer tracks which card numbers are allowed through what door, stolen cards can be locked out. Hard to get in unless you steal a scientist's card or have access to the door computer (kept in the security office, no network access) or use the laptop plus a hacked card to feed a pingstorm worth of sequentially numbered access attempts into the magnetic sensor, like John Connor in T2. Uhh, that got long...JFG
