JellyfishGreen
Fair point Zager. If you've got something creative to write using remote detonated C4, we'll read it. Remote detonated and timed explosives do both explode. You could reproduce the effect in the game just by getting the timing right. The game doesn't allow a soldier to press the button on a Claymore when you see the snakeman, but a 0-delay grenade would do the same trick, right? If you're talking about door-entry or breaching charges rather than traps then I see no problem - as all the doors in the game are unlocked, but having to breach a locked one creates realism with little effect on our imaginary gameplay. I wouldn't allow us to breach UFO hulls with C4, though, as that would be pushing the bounds of our game world too far. Yes, we are playing in the XCOM game world, but with the missing scenes filled in and graphics enhanced by whatever realism we can apply - that's just the challenge we've set ourselves. Nice first post by Spaceman42, by the way. Green's rooming with Martin Terrick? Guess he must have applied for a change of roommate after clashing with Wexford.Mind you, my character's curiosity about gadgets in the same room as this assassin is going to get him strangled in the night. But this could play out very interestingly. I vote that when Martin's exposed as a spy, we believe the story about his family, and our intelligence service figures out how to keep them alive by feeding Martin's handlers with dummy reports.Would an XCOM hostage rescue mission work? As a side trip during a UFO recovery? A false UFO recovery?
Zager
Maybe a pilot could get shot down, aliens could land and capture him after he ejects, and take him back to their base, and we track them there.
Spaceman42
Zager - I think you're thinking in a parallel line with what was just said. It's a "recovery mission" for JG's character's family [gah, can't remember name offhand] - only disguised as something else. It's the something else we're discussing. Zager
Oh, I was in a hurry and was just skimming it. Now I see. Well, Zager's planning on a visit to the corporate HQ once they start manufacturing the biocells that will get stolen (since, of all the technology present, they have the greatest potential for profit). You saw how he reacted when somebody screwed around with one of them. Imagine his reaction when he finds out that somebody stole them.
Loonie
I could easily implement Martin Terrick into being the one who steals them!
The Veteran
If that happens though we have to be able to ensure that XCom returns them all and no knowledge of them remains outside of the organisation and Zager. As we discussed, XCom will force a temporary sale of the biocell patent by Zager to the organisation and that will remain in effect until all research into it is completed and the war is over. The patent would then be returned to Zager and he would introduce his research to the world.Isn't there something else that he could steal? And on a parallel here... I edited spaceman's first post just to edit the fact that Gia is fine, there is no skyranger yet as it is still out on business and I've left the scene open at the end for the return of the new Hurricane interceptor for Davies and Gia. Plus of course the skyranger which is causing that ominous rumble...
Zager
What else would he steal? The minitanks are using the biocells to power them, any alien technology relies on elerium, so it would be pointless to steal it. Well, he could steal the secret to manufacturing alien alloys, would that be an acceptable alternative?
Loonie
Sure thing. I mean why not? The truth is that he doesn't have to steal anything. As far as I'm concerned he can get caught redhanded during the theft. Mine was just a suggestion back there.
The Veteran
I'm thinking that maybe he would steal something from the base but get caught like you said. The TC team at Pine gap would listen to th guys story an thn as a deception they would lt him leak out small amounts of information to his company. (Probably stuff that's been long discovered but remains clasified)Then eventually something would have to be done aboot the guys family but ot for a while... Spaceman42
About how long is it between posts to the thread, anyway? [Me, being the ADD type, would be the one to ask, neh?]
Zager
I vote we move ahead to the evening right now.
Alitorious
I vote someone help me writing in my 3 new characters. Actually, I'm beginning to wonder if throwing in three characters at once was a bad idea. Maybe three characters at once was a little too ambitious for me. I think I'll cut out Tatyana Kolotov entirely, and wait a while to introduce Jennifer Lecointe.Chuck Bruheme would stay in, though, but I still hold true to him dying in the first sectoid terror mission. Then Jennifer Lecointe would be one of the characters brought in to replace the losses of that mission. Is this okay? Basically it means I'm only responsible for one soldier until I can get my act together.
JellyfishGreen
Duly noted and recorded, Alitorious. Notice to all: My 'fic post this Friday is only a series of notes at the moment; I'll polish it into a real narrative by Sunday. But it sketches a timeframe for events of Jan 31 1998. This is the last of what I pictured happening before official base opening on Jan 1 1999. If you want to write something else that happens during this day, please do; I may even break my post into sections and re-post after yours to make the time flow better. If you want your character involved, but don't have an entire post, PM me or post here and I'll sew in whatever actions we collaborate on. Zager
Loonie, a few things I must point out: First, it's not Zager, it's Gaston who's talking. Gaston is team two's demoman, he's not a scientist. Second, his explosive is not a new technological achievement, it's what most demolitions men use. It's just a more powerful type of C4. It's not a secret development of X-COM.
Loonie
Oops. Guess that one goes right down the drain the. Thanks for telling me this quick though. I'll see about editing it quick. *EDIT: There, though I had to make it a completely different (and shorter) thing. :/
Spaceman42
Just out of curiousity... What *is* the base's layout? Is it the generic UFO Defence starting base? XCOMutil's "Improved" starting base? Something completely different? [i just want to know so I can figure out where Dherzhin might roam, or pick up rumours / "accidentally" overhear / whatever...]
Loonie
Check the topic in this section marked as Base Layout, Pine Gap
Spaceman42
Okay, that was kind of stupid of me... [Looks at 3D map and level maps] Hmm. Seems like I'd be spending my time mainly on Sublevels 1 & 2. Maybe also on 3, around the Eng-Lab. After all, they're the ones developing the stuff that'll be put on "my" ships, neh? [Feel free to write me in where appropriate, eh?]
The Veteran
That isn't the actual layout of the base... I edited JFish's blueprints for the final version but haven't put it up yet because I don't know how to! I need webspace to host them first I believe... I do not have that...
Spaceman42
No webspace, you say? No worries, I have plenty of that! E-mail the files to this_is_not_a_step@hot--SPAMBLOCK--mail.com , and I'll have 'em up ASAP. [The webspace is free, courtesy of a friend, so no worries there either... No banner ads, no popups, etc. Funfunfun.]
JellyfishGreen
I can host them too! I still have your first email and thought they were under revision. I was waiting for you to attach the Shooting Range to the left of the Armoury.
The Veteran
I don't think I ever changed it. I just stuck a gun rack in the range so that no weapons needed to be transported throughout the base. So if you ould post them when you have a chance please JFish. cheers, I'm going to go and play around with the fic. It needs editing majorly.... Have you edited your post yet JFish? I really want to sort that out...
JellyfishGreen
It's getting fairly big. I might break it into a few posts.
The Veteran
Definitely! Bearing in mind that it's still nowhere near the evening so the party still isn't happening for a while. Plus the fact that a lot of people are still posting about the 31st during the day...
