NoXTheRoXStaR
For the sake of fantasy, you decided to take a tropical cruise by yourself. On this voyage you've taken your PC whether it was laptop, desktop, console or tablet. Included in your luggage is a hard drive with all of your favorite 10 games of all time And a unlimited power source. Suddenly, the ship/plane wrecks and you find yourself on an island that's self sustaining. However, you must wait a full period of five years before someone comes about and rescues you. In the mean time your game playing gadget survives and your only source of entertainment is to play the games on your hard drive. Surely you'll while away your time by playing your favorite 10 games of all times. The Questions are, what are they, why, and how do you rank them? -NoX
Space Voyager
He he he, what are my hardware specifications? I wouldn't want to bring Skyrim with me just to find it not working. Oh, oh, is the internet connection working? I know, a funny question for a secluded island (and most obviously an end of islation, yet for a thought experiment you are suggesting...), but this means a huuuuge difference for games like Frozen Synapse. With internet, that game alone might be enough, while without internet, I'm not even considering to take FS with me...
silencer_pl
1. XCOM2. X-COM3. Unreal4. Jagged Alliance - Wildfire5. Crusader: No Remorse6. Crusader: No Regret7. Unreal Tournament 20048. Might&Magic 69. Heroes of Might&Magic (can't decide witch number I like everyone except 1 & 5)10. Command&Conquer Red Alert 2. Why? Because those are the games I have the most fun with. NoXTheRoXStaR
Uh well, the assumption is that since it's a fantasy tropical island your gaming gadget with it's unlimited power supply can also run any game regardless of specs. I suppose an internet connection is available (but you're still stuck for 5 years!). Sadly, (?) social media has been disconnected however, I do believe porn is still available. NoXTheRoXStaR
I'm going to start my top 10 list (counting down from 10-1) With my favorite RTS game of all time. Number 10 Red Alert 2 & Yuri's Revenge https://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k490/noxtheroxstar/RA2YR_zps9971692b.png The game was fantastic. Not only was it Westwood Studios best Command & Conquer game, it was completely off the wall. It had a great B celebrity cast, some of the best missions in the C&C franchise, but also for the first time ever having 3 playable factions. Unlike games released today with DLC, Yuri's Revenge was a Expansion Pack! New Units, a new faction, storyline, and improved on the base game. UFOs - Check.Mutants - Check. Time travel - Check. Mind controlled squids - check. You get my drift. Westwood Studios at one time had created skirmish/multiplayer maps that were not packaged with the game and expansion. They were released via their website in the early 2000's. They are not included in the Ultimate C&C Collection released by EA (spits). So I have included a link in this post for a direct download of these maps right here! Trust me, if you're a RA2/Yuri Fan, you'll want this. I've also included a readme file that will help you run this game at faster speeds if you have Windows 8 or 8.1 -NoX
silencer_pl
Ekhm - So the Dune strategy game made by Westwood didn't have 3 playable factions? Space Voyager
NoXTheRoXStaR
Uh no Silencer, I said...."Not only was it Westwood Studios best COMMAND & CONQUER game, having the best missions in the C&C franchise, but also for the first time having 3 playable factions. I never said this was Westwood Studios first game that had a 3rd faction it was the first time a C&C game had a 3rd faction. And DUNE was not C&C. Space Voyager
Ah, I misunderstood, too. ANYway. My choice would be sandbox strategy games, action RPGs and multiplayer. Let's see. My first choices would be... Sword of the Stars, Frozen Synapse, one of the Total War titles (if mods are allowed, than Medieval 2, otherwise probably Shogun 2), Fallen Enchantress, Skyrim. I'd love to write one of the X (-)COMs, but frankly I think I've had enough of them. Uh, that reminds me I need to try S3.

NoXTheRoXStaR
Number 9 Madden '08 https://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k490/noxtheroxstar/madden08_zps69649a58.png An American Sports game?! Why? Well I'm an American and American Football is my favorite sport. Madden '08 was the last game in the franchise to be on PC, before EA (spits) decided that the Madden series would only be for console gaming. It's replay value was extreme! Practice mode, 1 on 1 mode, Franchise mode which allowed you to control a team of your choosing for 30 straight seasons. You could also do a fantasy draft and pick players who weren't on your team. Historical mode where you can replay legendary games that put you in a situational predicament. The best part is the mods! There is still an active modding community that has revamped a large portion of the game, graphics, newly implemented rules and the current NFL roster found here. (NFL will be coming to London in 2016 with it's own team) -NoX
Space Voyager
Blasphemy - one can't have enough of X (-)COM. I know... But I still haven't finished Enemy Within... Seriously, it drags forever and it is a mental hardship to not just deinstall the whole thing. I only keep it because I'm determined to finish it. At some point. I played and loved XCOM, but somehow I find this playthrough to be just more of the same. Soldier mods don't make enough of a difference for me. silencer_pl
If you think that Enemy Within drags forever then what I can tell about Long War? Vanilla XCOM:EW is as long as standard X-COM (I think).
Space Voyager
It drags for me as I don't have the will to play it, it is (I believe you) not too long otherwise. When I have those few minutes to spare, I play something else.
Thorondor
Favorite 10 games of all time - what are they, why, and how do you rank them, etc... You know, perhaps counterintuitively, the whole Tropical Island Games logic doesn't necessarily apply to your favorite games of all time, precisely because those are quite likely the ones you've already played to death. As SV puts it - much as one loves some of those greatest games one can eventually get enough. :: So, all told, NoX, something like Games That Never Get Old might actually prove a better overall formulation/proposition in the particular scenario described to respondents here. NoXTheRoXStaR
Great point Thor. I should of reworded it. However... Let's take a second to take things into consideration, shall we? We all know that replay ability is one of the main ingredients that helps us to determine our favorite games, that goes without saying or...I at least hope it is.This IS your Tropical Island, YOU decided to take these games with you. Your justification for taking them along are of your own priority. All of our favorite games will eventually become stale however, that's not my concept. That wasn't my mindset coming into my topic discussion. I've decided to share with everyone the ten games I would take along with me while informing everyone why, what they are and how I ranked them but more importantly to share with everyone links and files that people might have missed. NoXTheRoXStaR
For me this game was a no brainer, the problem is I couldn't pick one. So as an exception I've decided to make it a tie. If you're a fan of the series you'll understand why. Number 8_____________________Advance WarsDays of Ruin/Dual Strike_____________________ https://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k490/noxtheroxstar/AWDS_zps0e8f1e1a.png Advance Wars or Famicom Wars as it's known in Japan is quite literally the definition of virtual crack. The only thing worse in my eyes is being a crack head that's addicted to this game. The reasons I chose these two out of the franchise is for several reasons. Dual Strike was the 3rd iteration of the series that introduced/utilized the dual screen. It added another dimension to the series that was missing from the GBA (GameBoyAdvance) era. It created a new and different storyline by going in an entirely different direction than Intelligent Systems went with the series beforehand. The first 3 game plots of the trilogy were for a better word...lame. However, Days of Ruin added a different flavor to the series, a new art style with an entirely different apocalyptic story line. It added new units and characters. Hopefully before the end of the Nintendo 3DS life cycle we'll have a new Advance Wars game. -NoX
NoXTheRoXStaR
Do you enjoy torment? Do you scream at your monitor? Have you ever wanted to choke a pixelated character with your bare hands for running left inside of running right? Well friends, you've probably played.... Number 7 https://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k490/noxtheroxstar/COM_zpsebaaac95.png Is this game hard? Yes. Does this game require patients and luck? Damn right! If you've ever played this game and didn't reload a prior save at least 20 times per mission, you're a liar! From the Spanish developing team of Pyro Studios comes the WWII series Commandos. An isometric real time strategy/puzzle game that will be sure to make you want to not only hate Nazi's but also hate moronic path finding! Each of your Commandos have a different skill set in which they or perhaps you utilize in order to kill your enemies. Explosives, stealth, bear traps, throat slicing, and of course diving out of the river in order to harpoon your enemy's. This game was not based on the enemy AI's intelligence, but how you can exploit it. I have 3 copies of this game/expansion, physical disks, the Steam version and the GOG version. I personally recommend that if you have either Windows 7 or Windows 8, 8.1 that you choose the GOG version. Despite recent changes to the Steam version, it still functions very poorly. One last thing, there are 20 missions in Behind Enemy Lines. You will need to gain the rank of Captain in order to unlock the 20th and final mission of the game. There are cheats for this game, but only pussies use cheats...don't be a pussy. -NoX

NoXTheRoXStaR
Having played Bioshock, DeadSpace, multiple instances of Resident Evil and about 10 million other horror games. I Never tried out... or heard of this game. If you have never played SS2. I believe...you are (as I was) missing out on a game that could or perhaps should change your life. IMO games played in the dark, by yourself are hard to do. There's reasons, you're married & have kids, live with your parents, and don't have an imagination. The fucking neighbors above you that never seem to go to sleep at night. Etc etc, this game invokes strategy as it does role playing elements and survival horror in one complete package. Number 6 https://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k490/noxtheroxstar/SS2_zps24168e83.png The Word "Prioritize" comes to mind when playing any survival horror game. System Shock 2 is no exception. So swallow your OJ and chomp down on your "potato chimps" Were off for a bumpy ride. If you don't play this game you're lame. -NoX

NoXTheRoXStaR
#5 The Walking Dead (Telltale) If you combined the comic/AMC TV series The Walking Dead, with an awesome 2010 adventure game (2013). You get a flawless victory. The writers for the TV series need to play this game and take notes, because this game gives the TV show a run for it's money. https://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k490/noxtheroxstar/TWD_zps1raxedbx.png The animation is unique almost cell shaded. Any animosity you might have towards the type of animation TellTale's artists used, will quickly dissipate once the story begins. Why? It's so engaging that after you've played an episode and yes this game is episodic. You'll find yourself checking your own moral compass. The music is ambient, background noises of bee's buzzing, and birds chirping. No matter how serene the time being is, death is around every corner. QTE's do play a part in the game and will have an impact on your game, but again, you'll be so engaged in the story that it almost becomes NECESSARY to change your underwear. I believe you could play this game at least 3 times to get everything out of it, it can be a long game. If you don't already own it, it goes on sale at GamersGate.com basically every month, price drops to about $10.00 USD. -NoX
NoXTheRoXStaR
# 4. StarCraft II (Blizzard) StarCraft II is the follow up to the original game released in 1998. It took Blizzard nearly 12 years to make this sequel, whether you feel the wait was worth it depends on your level of patience. Then again, we could of never had a sequel at all, so there ya go. https://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k490/noxtheroxstar/SC2_zps1dh7ulvf.png There's 3 distinct races to choose from; The Terrans (Humans), The Zerg (Insects), and The Protoss (Obamas). Who basically build up their bases/units and then proceed to blow the living shit out of each other. Rinse and Repeat. It's fun as hell though, and the storyline is what makes this series so interesting. Blizzard did a respectable job of this series despite the fact that their brain child Chris Metzen (Who basically created StarCraft) had very little to do with the sequel aside from some small voice acting and contributed to the writing. The multiplayer however, is where the bulk of the game is to be enjoyed as there are currently a lot of unemployed people playing this game online. -NoX
NoXTheRoXStaR
#3. The Oregon Trail II Deluxe Edition (MECC) Why in the hell would I put this ancient Educational video game from circa 1992 on this list?Because it was fun as hell! Where else can you name Yourself, friends, family members, or say your favorite heavy metal band members and put them in a life and death situation in the later half of 19th century America? https://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k490/noxtheroxstar/OT2_zpsx2qwua21.png In this version you can choose your destination, what year to start on and bring specific items along with you for the trip. Like bacon, lots and lots of bacon. This time around you had a much larger choice of what kind of Career and skills to take along. Oddly enough some careers were omitted, such as Circus Clown, Gangsta Rapper and Waffle House Waitress. https://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k490/noxtheroxstar/Dysentery_zpse5ak7gqx.png It's just Me Against the Dysentery baby! -NoX
