Ranks?

i believe that it is quite similar to ufo/tftd. each person has a certain amount of points/experience, but you can't see it. as they progress, they get promoted. it works really strangly, mind you, and to keep getting higher ranks, you need a certaiin amount of agents hired. all units can get promoted to squaddie, and from then on, the best squaddie gets promoted to squad leader if you have a certain amount of agents, from then, if you have another certain amount of agents, the best squadleader gets promoted to sergent etc. thats my thoughts anyway...

Correct, more or less. Send troopers into combat, and they gain ranks. However, you need a certain amount of troopers to get certain ranks. For example, if you only have a handful, you'll only get low ranks. Get more troops, and a few soldiers will get promoted higher. Get still more troops, and a handful will get better ranks again.

The manual details the exact formula. Remember that troopers will not be promoted unless they've actively worked in combat (as opposed to not firing at anything and hiding in the corner). Once they've got that 'initial' experiance, they can go on to any rank, but expect regular troops to take the higher ranks before the new additions to your squad do.

Lastly, the highest rank is Commander. To get that, you need to have a grand total of, if my memory serves me well, 120 soldiers under your command. Good luck getting one of them.

There's also no effect caused by squad ranks aside from morale.

A high ranking officer is a good morale boost. But if he's killed in the line of duty, don't expect your men to keep a cool head.

I can only wonder how bad the effect would be if a Commander was killed in the line of duty...

I once haxored a save game so that my favorite squaddie was insta promoted to commander. After he took a stray rocket to the chest every single person under my control panicked. It was vaguely amusing, but got boring quickly :eh:
