Ah, tower defense games. The bane of all smartphone users trying to be productive. The black hole in the App store, sucking every waking moment of your day. This game genre has produced some of the most appalling waste of 99 cents; but once in a while, a gem pops up and changes the entire mobile gaming experience entirely on its own. Enter Clash of Clans (CoC), a latecomer in the whole ‘shift to mobile’ that everyone in the game industry has talked about.

Suffering from a nasty image set by the titles that came before CoC, this game is set out to change the ‘freemium’ model through clever game design. Rather than requiring players to ‘pay to win’, this app actually encourages you to use your brain. See, no amount of cash can help you against a well-calculated barrage of arrows from a dedicated attacker. That is the beauty of Supercell's creation – strategy trumps money.

A Beautiful Marriage between Game and Console

It is intriguing to notice that the mobile gaming industry has a design paradigm that did not exist in the past. Apps are now being designed specifically for a certain platform. In the past, while there are exclusive titles for the PS One or Gamecube, the games were not created to utilize each console’s strengths; probably with the technology at the time or for other reasons.

These days, like Clash of Clans, games are fully aware of how to take advantage of high tech hardware. Take a look at the visuals of this game. For a game that resides on the cartoony side, it still manages to show vibrant visuals. Although it is definitely the best looking game of 2013, CoC makes use of the A6 and A7 chips of the ‘consoles’ where it belongs.

Apple’s smartphones and tablets are notorious for having such high-end graphic processors, and Starcell knows what to do with it. It’s not rendered perfectly and the frame rate could’ve been amped up a notch, but the app utilizes the necessary features mentioned about the iPhone 5C on O2’s feature page.

Borrowing from the right sources

Clash of Clans alludes to many gameplay elements which defined popular games such as Battle Realms, Starcraft, and Pikmin. It is easy to dismiss as just another tower defense strategy game at first glance, but after a while it will be evident that ithas a lot more to offer. A player is hailed as the town’s almighty (as with all tower defense games). Users are tasked to fortify their towns with buildings using resources against the onslaught of would-be raiders coming from literally across the globe. In old-school strategy game fashion, unit management is also imperative. Apart from managing the structures, weapons, and defenses, players have the additional task to enhance their armies.

There is visible progress as people get the hang of Clash of Clans. It’s interesting how the game is designed to hook you into spending more hours to unlock better units, which is a huge achievement for the developers of CoC. Rarely have we find titles in this genre that doesn’t lose steam after a few hours of play.

Similar to those with sophisticated matchmaking systems, Clash of Clans employs a raiding mechanism which allows other players to attack your base. Players can watch a replay of the raid, and have time to strategize a better defense plan. Sure, it’s depressing to see your entire town getting massacred. But it gives you the opportunity to rebuild and re-fortify, making these ambushes less frustrating and more motivating.

The Expected Verdict

Single player goodness coupled with interactive madness. Fully exploiting the ultra-modern specs of its native Apple consoles. We cannot ask for a better time-waster. Download it as soon as you can.

You did a great job and explain well that why Clash of Clans become so popular. It’s nice to see a game that doesn’t just rely on spending money to win but instead focuses on smart strategies and have the authority to make our base on our own or also copy the best clash of clans bases with link, You also points out how the game uses the power of mobile devices well, making it fun and visually appealing. if anyone like strategy games then must play Clash of Clans.

I have been playing this game from almost 10 years and we have 1000's of people playing in multiple clans and creating base designs for clash of clans. Game never gets boring. They have introduced hero equipments in latest game series. They had official forum before but got closed later and global chat which many players keep talking about. I'm happy to find this forum and someone talking about clash of clans. Players enjoyed chatting with strangers, making new clans with these strangers, and socialising with them, but due to more toxic players in the global chat led to the removal of this feature. It is also possible to play this game on PC now they have beta version released on google play games. Although everyone prefer to play on Android phone or iOS.
