Macattack
Graphics is great, animations awesome, voice overs nicely done.... but the game itself is awful.I loved the previous UFO games and played them over and over again. Nice balance, eases you into the game. I have to nerdrage now because this game is just pissing me off no end.I come here for help and am tired about reading" Oh I just completed this game on impossible level, and it was so easy" .. yeah whatever !! This game is far from easy. UFO Afterlight is unbalanced and no fun to play now, I really loved it at the start. Many times I have had to restart from the beginning because of getting slaughtered by beastman ~ and this is even on normal ffs !! Loading the map over and over to try and find some advantage but I can not get cover on many maps and the beastman range is rediculous. Multiple grenades rain from the skies, items I can never use.Whirlwind forces of nature that follow your team around the map is just so frustrating !!! Just give me a stash of Reticulan ammo clips and I will be a happy soldier ( do I have to kill more at the start? ) Beastman weapons WTF !! ~ can not even use them for so long in the game, I've killed hundreds ( this is a stupid mechanic that our scientists cant work out quickly how to use this stuff, even after getting rifles and rocket launchers, my team getting slaughtered by shamans and captains I still can not use these weapons !! Sure all the things you probably heard before, but this strategy site offers very little advice on game mechanics. What should I research first so I dont waste many hours of game time just to find out my entire team can be shot to bits by beastmen from 5 miles away, or blasted to bits by beastmen grenades that have pinpoint accuracy even through building walls ? wtf is with that? Incredibly limited resourses, earth weapons are a joke, half the range of Reticulan lasers ( which because of no ammo clips you are forced to use the craptasic projectile weapons which have no range and all the soldiers who use them are blind and unable to see a beastman unless the enemy is almost touching them.. ( by that time your team is shot to bits because most of the maps offer no cover whatsoever ) and this is all before level 6 soldiers... Why is the game so imbalanced on normal mode? Surely my soldiers can shoot just as far? They have outstanding dex stats and the aimed shot says very good to outstanding. I am tired to read ~ " Oh you need to build heavy armor... oh you need to build antismell devices "It takes so long to research at the start, meanwhile your team of soldiers are stuck with pathetic weapons and out numbered 3 to 1. Is this because I installed the mod for new items and tech?I am tired of struggling just to get the game started... I chose normal because I want an enjoyable experience, not some one sided finger probe. Where are the guides on here about what to research first?Where is the guide to getting to use Beastmen weapons as soon as possible? The drones? What a mission to get these things, they are awesome but did not seem to do much for my team All I want is a nice gaming experience where I can work on research without getting genocided because I do not have sniper rifles yet. Space Voyager
Starting from the beginning? If you are trying to play ironman, you might want to reconsider. AL is "unbalanced" in a way that you can not play it through without saving and loading. As you'll be forced to do so, it is IMO best to start as soon as possible, meaning whenever you lose a soldier. BTW, which mod have you installed? Strokend
Always save before a mission. Save after a mission. Heck, save when you need to decide what research to do, even. If you've installed a mod like Rebalanced, that makes the game incredibly difficult (unbeatable, it's said), you have to know what you're doing to know how to fit the new researches in properly. As for it taking too long to get the tech you want? You're researching wrong. Get your supplies asap, ignore the first beastmen mission (you'll probably lose some soldiers if you do it too early, and there's no penalty for ignoring it until it goes away), and send a team of well-upgraded drones when assaulting the beastmen. The audiosensors are going to find your enemy faster than any visual (eyes or camera) will. The sooner you can kidnap a soldier, the better. That's all you need, a capture-the-soldier mission. Macattack
So this time around, I move south and discover the Reticulans and after diploing some rifles and ammo clips I declared war and took over thier fuel base. After that fight I had a nice stockpile of alien weapons and ammo.Beastmen were a joke, the laser rifles own them. Every now and then, the Reticulans try to take over the fuel station, my entire squad is humans, I have 1x medic, the rest are soldiers and soldier techs. 3x soldiers carry projectile weapons as backup for Reticulan force field armor wearing aliens. I have just received the Earth technologies and currently have over 160 Reticluan ammo clips, 8 Reticulan rocket launchers and 30 rockets.I have been able to just focus on research and now have heavy armor. I am currently searching for a crystal mine ( I will take Reticulan one as soon as I can handle environment 6 ~ all in heavy armor )The crystal mine will allow the laser sniper rifles This new game is going so much easier~ Highly recommend attacking Reticulans as soon as you canAlso found that if I kept my territory small, the enemy does not upgrade their units much.Yes I save my game often, but before I only had basic projectile weapons which are horrible, the reticulan laser rifle owns the battlefield 80% of the time. NoXTheRoXStaR
I never did care for this game out of the series, just seemed too corny. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I ever beat this game.

Macattack
Loaded one soldier up with run ability and the flame thrower, force field armor, he can solo almost any map. One shots any organic enemy, crispy critters Reticulans and Martians. Am looking forward to the fusion weapons, am currently interogating a Martian soldier. I found that if you zerg the Martians, many just stand still instead of throwing those nasty grenades... maybe a bug? ~ I still have the Reticulan fuel station and have sided with the Expedition ( purple flag Reticulans ), I no longer use Reticulan weapons and do not care much for the Reticulan soldiers as nothing lives long enough to bother with psionic abilities.
