Thorondor
Here's another rumour from Kotaku: Last week, Take-Two registered the domains thebureau-game.com, thebureau-game.net, whathappenedin62.com, and whathappenedin62.net. These domains seem to hint at a rebranding of 2K's beleaguered XCOM shooter, which places players in the shoes of an FBI agent in 1962. Given the success of Firaxis' XCOM: Enemy Unknown, I wouldn't be surprised if 2K thought having two very different games in different genres could dilute the franchise's brand. The XCOM shooter has been in off-on development since 2005 and gone through a number of iterations at several studios, including 2K Australia, Irrational Games and current developer 2K Marin. Recent information suggests that 2K dropped the first-person perspective in favor of SOCOM-esque third-person tactical shooter possibly for downloadable distribution platforms. :: Could the game see a name change to 'The Bureau'? Space Voyager
He he he. Anyway, the Bureau would nicely detach them from X-COM, which is more a burden than a blessing in their case. I still wish they wouldn't go for that antique look.
silencer_pl
XCOM site is MIA, and 2K also deleted all the YT movies. Guess the project unofficially is dead.

NKF
The comment by Lord Custard Smingleigh in the comments both made my day, and makes me want to see that game happen. Fetching hats indeed. - NKF Knan and Space Voyager

Thorondor
https://downloads.2kgames.com/2kgames/uploads/images/community/base_ops-16631-cropped.jpg :: Here's a little more to chew on: The XCOM universe is expanding. In the coming days the world will get a fresh look at the long-awaited squad-based tactical shooter in development at 2K Marin. Announced back in 2010, the game has undergone an evolution since we last showed it to you at E3 2011. Firaxis’ critically acclaimed turn-based strategy title, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, has reignited the classic franchise and we feel that the time is right to deliver a new experience within the world of XCOM. The creative development of this game has been a collaborative process of discovery and iteration. 2K’s culture allows our studios the freedom to refine their visions, to explore new ideas, and to deliver the best possible experiences for players. Through this exploration, 2K Marin has refined their vision, and as a result the game has evolved into a high-stakes narrative experience imbued with core XCOM concepts. The wait is nearly over and we can’t wait to share more details with you about the game in only a matter of days. [Source]
Space Voyager
Great! I'm glad they decided to go on with it. And X-COM enthusiasts might chew it down a bit easier now that the security of turn based strategy is assured.
Lt.Havoc
A turn based X-Com game set in the 1960s, that looks all totally retro sci-fi? Heck yeah! That sounds really interesting. Even if its called "The Bureau", being a predecessor of the X-Com project, it would still make a nice prequel.
Space Voyager
This is supposed to be a team based shooter with elements of strategy, not turn based strategy.
Lt.Havoc
Wait, in this very thread people said the game was restyled due to the success of the new turn based X-Com, because the original idea, a FPS, was not well received. So, how do you know its still the same game we saw years ago?
NKF
Sounds like they saw Firaxis' attempt and had to stop for a really big rethink and perhaps admit (not publicly) that perhaps they were going too far off course and so had to backtrack a little bit. That's a Good Thing. - NKF
Lt.Havoc
Yeah, I think that 2k had to put the emergency breaks to the project after the negative feedback they got. Well even if its not trun based, as long as it has strategy elements and plays well, I really dont mind. I do like the setting at least, there arent many games that have this retro style or is set in the 60s.

So, how do you know its still the same game we saw years ago? I have no way of knowing until we see some new footage, but I can't see an FPS being redone into a turn based strategy. An NKF said, they must have taken a rethink and some redo on the game and this is good. What have they come up with remains to be seen.
Kret
Well, 2K has posted a video, and following the links on the description seems to comfirm that they've moved into a 3rd person squad tactical shooter. Thorondor
https://downloads.2kgames.com/thebureau/img/ss-2.jpg https://downloads.2kgames.com/thebureau/img/ss-3.jpg “ The Bureau tells the story of XCOM’s mysterious beginnings,” said Morgan Gray, creative director at 2K Marin. “We’re expanding the universe with a declassified tale of government conspiracy and heroic cover-ups told through third-person tactical gameplay.” In the spirit of the XCOM franchise, The Bureau ’s calculated combat design requires players to think and act tactically. The game’s third-person perspective gives the player a sense of spatial awareness and grants them the freedom to transition in and out Carter’s unique Battle Focus ability seamlessly – heightening the tactical shooter action. The Bureau also fully embraces the concept of permanent consequence. As our last line of defense, every command can mean the difference between life and death for Carter, his squad and mankind. “The team has been working hard to leverage core XCOM elements like tactical decision-making and permanent death of squad mates in a purposeful way that makes this a unique tactical shooter,” added Gray. “To that end, The Bureau will challenge players unlike any other third-person tactical shooter.” :: Read the full press release here.
